These photographs were taken by Raymond J. Kaul during the construction of U.S. Highway 30 near Chester, West Virginia in 1918. Kaul was my great aunt’s (Rebecca E. “Becky” Johnston Kaul) husband. I believe he was a civil engineer, but I don’t know what role he played in the road project. Becky Johnston Kaul was a teacher for many years at the one-room Washington Schoolhouse on Fairview Road in Hancock County, West Virginia.
Most of these photographs have “144” or “177” written in pencil on the back and are 2” x 4” in actual size. One ( as marked below) is labeled “Parade Rest, May 1918,” which I assume is the date of the project. I recognize some of the landmarks from my childhood in the 1950s, but I would love to learn more about the photographs. I have enlarged and cropped several of the pictures to provide additional closeup views.
