Venice

Today Nathaniel and I returned from a week in Venice. We had a wonderful, relaxed, peaceful time. Our journey was by overnight train, crowded but not too bad. After dropping our bags at the hotel we began wandering the city right away, even getting out on the lagoon in a vaporetto. Nathaniel kept his eyes peeled for a mask, since he’d decided that a Venetian carnival mask would be his souvenir. We also made sure to visit the pigeons of the Piazza de San Marco. I was very curious about the small lagoon island of Torcello, which we visited on our second morning. This wonderful quiet island is home to the oldest church in the lagoon and seems to have a larger population of cats than people! We had wonderful weather, from bright sun to downpouring rain, clear mornings and crystal nights. Walking was such a blast that we did it all day long (with a few hours break for Uno and napping in the afternoon). On our last day we made our way out to the Lido where we rented a double bike to tool around. Our diet was mostly pizza and gelato, with some torrone and pasta thrown in for variety. We had a great week together.

Mary and Alex decided to sit this one out, relaxing and working at home instead. Alex’s blog both looked forward and bid farewell to this quiet week.   ...Eric
