The village is surrounded by a vast mangrove forest filled with interweaving channels full of fish, birds and a colony of Madagascar flying foxes, Pteropus rufus. In recent years large portions of the forest have been cut down for lumber and charcoal. This same scenario is seen all along the coast as the demand for charcoal and building lumber increases.

He reported that 45,000 seedlings were successfully planted in our first year of effort! An additional 5,000 seedlings were planted, for use as fuel and construction lumber. In order to protect the reforestation efforts, it is important to invest in agroforestation so that the local communities will not have to use the new forests for fuel and construction wood.

Click the pictures below to enlarge.

Jamie Shattenberg, a faithful Eden Projects volunteer, sent us pictures of these trees which Eden Projects President Steve Fitch will soon see when he visit’s WorldVenture’s Madagascar location. These are some of the trees they’ve planted out of the same heart for reforestation and agroforestation.

In Fianar, Dries also reports that:

We have gained access to over forty different species of indigenous tree seedlings for reforestation.
Concerning our agroforestation efforts, we already have a variety of fruit tree seedlings - including apricot and avocado. Additionally, we purchased over 10,000 Arabica coffee beans for planting this season.
Dries’ goal is to plant 200,000 to 250,000 seedlings in the near future depending on the manner in which everything comes together this first year.

Ultimately, we are seeing a demonstration of success in our projects as the nurseries are being methodically structured for large seedling production and cultivation in the future.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Author: Danielle Fitch is currently an intern for the Free Methodist Church of Southern California (FMCSC), and an alum of Azusa Pacific University (APU).
