Research Cruise in the South Pacific
Research Cruise in the South Pacific
We arrived in Nuku’Alofa, the main town on the island of Tonga June 9th, 2009, after 24 hours of transit including a stop over in Fiji. For the next four days, we toured around the non-touristy island and enjoyed the Tongan lifestyle of native dances, castaway beaches, giant men in grass skirts, and exotic foods. We also snuck in some preparation time on the ship getting lab equipment ready for the research cruise.
malo e lelei...’ofa atu...malo ‘aupito. hello...i love you...thank you very much
ahoy and all aboard!
On June 12th, we left Tonga to embark on a 27 day research cruise with Jason II, a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) housed on the Research Vessel Thomas G. Thompson. We are sampling at a place called hydrothermal vents, deep sea volcanos where an entire ecosystem exists without sunlight.
