WHITE FLIES

 

There has been much press of late about an infestation of black flies, particularly in Maine where they apparently thrive. What one never hears anything about though are white flies. White flies are not known to exist because they can’t be seen in the daylight. That’s because they’re white. White flies are not to be confused with their distant relatives, no-see-ums, who live far away. Scientists have wondered aloud that if black flies can be seen in daylight because they’re black, why can’t white flies, being white, be seen at night. It turns out that white flies sleep at night. Campers in Maine have reported that on windless nights they can still hear the quiet shuffling of leaves. But this is actually the sound of millions of white flies snoring.
