Ganesha

(born out of the earth)

A little stuffed elephant

accompanied me as my lucky mascot

to all my ice-skating competitions.

Again, I have discovered a small elephant,

this time in another culture,

another continent,

another world:

The boy-elephant,

Ganesha,

symbol of eternal,

inner Joy, Innocence and Wisdom –

in India.

My childhood rises up to greet me.

Curiosity and fascination propel me to form

Ganesha, the elephant child,

out of clay.

Simple red or white earth that slowly takes its form.

The round belly, hands and feet

express his sweetness.

He radiates childlike contentment.

His movements are

rhythmic and fluid,

despite his corpulent body.

His elephant head is symbolic for universal

Innocence and Wisdom.

He defends these qualities

with the weapons that he holds.

He also holds a sweet treat,

a gift to stem the hunger.

One hand is raised to bless,

to bestow Good Fortune.

With his broken tooth he writes down

the History of the Universe.

Bedecked like a king,

with jewels,

sparkling diamonds

and glittering gold,

He sits innocently smiling.

Eternal attributes weave their mythology

into my artistic creation,

allowing him to dance,

reborn,

out of my hands.
