| Summary: - Trip - Plano TX to Amarillo TX to Durango CO to Montrose CO to Walsenburg CO to Dumas TX to Plano TX - Pack - Runt/X and Shadow - Date - Fri 05/23 @ 3:00 PM till Mon 05/26 @ 3:45 PM - Miles - 1966 Fri: - Plano to Amarillo TX - 75 N, 380 W, 287 N - 03:00 PM to 09:00 PM - 380 miles - It is good to be on vacation. - Pack is snacked by a Hyundai and Little Red Truck. Pack is proceeding at spirited pace of 85 when said snack occurs. Gotta love TX. - Weather is lovely until 30 miles outside Amarillo. Rain comes horizontally from the West. X's cries of pain are blotted out by Runt's reminder to bring full face helmet and not a skull cap. X sulks. - After 5 miles of pelting, pack rides to sunshine, safety, and a hotel. No beer to be found. X sulks. Sat: - Amarillo TX to Durango CO - I40 W, 469 N, 39 N, 56/412 W, 21 WN, 64 E, 84 N, 160 W - 08:00 AM to 05:30 PM (local time, gained a hour) - 528 miles - Alarm Clock Incident # 1 - Bliss is shattered at 5:50 AM. X has failed in his assigned task of 'make sure the alarm clock is turned off'. Offer of 'there was no operator's manual and the little dots are rubbed off and etc/etc' is ignored. Runt sulks. - Some unexplored roads before falling back on tried and true 64/84/etc. - Watch your gas, there ain't alot of it.. Fill @ I40 and then Roy. - 469 is straight, empty (except for the 2 patrol cars), marked 55 (silliness) and the locals actually drive 55 (incredible silliness) - Some sections of 39 and 21 were pleasing. - 10 minute wait in Chromo until we could find Ray to turn on the pumps. Shadow's snickers about need for bigger tank or better mileage or Runt needing to lose weight (luckily she did not hear him say that one) were not appreciated. Ray did give Runt a 15 cent discount on the gas. - 160 was pleasing as always. Tourist who actually look at the sights should be banned. - No rainsuits required, sprinkled on a few times, dry roads. Ride to sunshine, chant for Bob and refuse to look at the very big bolts of lightening works again. Sun: - Durango CO to Dumas TX (Montrose/Alamosa CO on the way) - 550 N, 50 E, 149 S, 160 E, I25 S, 64/87 SE - 08:00 AM to 10:00 PM (local time, loast a hour) - 637 miles - Alarm Clock Incident # 2 - Bliss is shattered at 4:15 AM. X has properly disabled the hotel clock. However, a slight miscalculation in converting Central Time (phone setting) to Mountain Time (local time) has resulted in X's phone going off 2 hours early. The degree of unhappiness and irritation this bring upon the Pack (specifically Runt) cannot be overstated. - 550 and 50 were most pleasing (and dry). Combination of Shadow's evolution as a rider and a BMW vs X's regression as a rider and a 2 up loaded Vulcan results in alot of riding solo for X/Runt. He did wait at the turns. (Add brake fluid story) - Blue Mesa Lake has been renamed Pale Green Pond. Someone needs to calculate how many billions of gallons it will take to get it back to level it was 4 years ago when I first saw it - Travellers on 50 are entertained by: - the Mack Truck from Hell which passes everything everywhere. Most memorable pass: - 7 cars in line, road opens, car 3 makes a pass. Mack Truck comes from slot 6 and goes into left most oncoming lane to go it. They are 3 abreast and the ride of the hill is approaching. Cars panic, Mack powers on for the finish line. He was last seen disappearing over the horizon. - The idiot bicyclist who is looking good going 40 MPH down the mountain, pulling his little bike trailer, until he decides to brake. I never saw a tankslapper on a bicycle before. Guy was whiter than the Gyro helmet on his silly head when we went pass. - Weather starts to go downhill outside Lake City on 149. Suit up, sprinkles but still a good ride. Pack frolics in the joy and eventually cruises into Alamosa for a very late lunch (gotta ride to sunshine, no time to stop). - Lunch complete, 160 to Walsenburg. 50 miles from Walsenberg, Pack notices 2 bikes coming the other way and hears something like Goooo Baaaack, accompanied by frantic gesturing. Pack scoffs and continues. It starts to rain. It starts to rain hard. Car in front starts to fade in the wall of water. Shadow decides to PASS THE CARS in a downpour and seems surprised when X/Runt remain behind. Shadow is next seen in Walsenberg. - It starts to rain harder going up the mountain (Y'all getting the idea yet?). Next we get a little sleet, then a little sleet still lying on the road, then a little sleeting of the glasses (hint, that is not good for viability). Walsenberg is reached, Pack turns South, the Sun Shines and all is well. (If X would just stop shivering and making the bike jerk all around.) - Raton is reached, cry of push on to Clayton is heard, cry to push on to Dumas is heard, cry to push on to Amarillo is drowned out by IT IS REALLY DARK. Dumas was fine. Mon: - Dumas TX to Plano - 287 S, 380 E, 2478/Backroad home - 08:15 AM to 03:45 PM - 421 miles - Alarm Clock Incident # 3 - Needless to say, no clocks were set. Unfortunately, this included X's internal clock, hence cry of 'Runt is is 7:35 and we gotta go in 25 minutes' was uttered. Shadow took time realignment well. X does not travel well without his morning paper/coffee/muffin. Runt seemed pleased by his displeasure. - Hit Amarillo, clouds disappear, pack rolls home safely. Very pleasing |
