Bainbridge Island was scoured by the north-south movement of glaciers a gazillion years ago.  As a result, the Island is more level on that axis. But east-west is carved with hills.

Tom Clune, owner of B. I. Cycle, was inspired a few years ago to create a training ride worthy of some of the local animals who like to maximize their training and bragging rights.  So he set about identifying a route which covered the most elevation gain in the shortest distance possible.

When he explained to his wife, Betty, what he was working on, she is reported to have exclaimed:  “But why?!,” which seemed to Tom a great name for such a ride.

You can get a flavor of what’s in store if you do this ride by looking at this photo from the Chilly Hilly event.  It’s not called the Chilly HILLY for nothing.  This is the view looking east from near the highest point on Baker Hill.
