NBA playoffs, TV, Computers, & Time...

The NBA playoffs are on right now. I love watching playoff basketball. The players are more intense, the crowd is louder, and the stakes are higher. My beloved Kings weren’t even close to making the playoffs this year, but nevertheless, I’ve enjoyed this playoffs immensely.

But even with the miracle of a DVR (TiVo) where I can fast-forward through all the commercials and even speed up the action of the game, I still find myself spending a good amount of time keeping up with the games on TV. And this is OK; it is a great way to unwind at the end of the day. And it allows me to have talking points with most people in public.

Because this has been a consistent ritual most nights, it got me thinking about what I would do in general if I didn’t have TV to watch. Or furthermore, a computer to entertain myself with. In my youth group, adults will talk about the kids as being millennials, forgetting that although there is a 6-10 year age gap between them and myself, I am a millennial too. I’ve grown up with computers and TV forming daily life. And for the most part, it always has.

So what do people do when there’s no TV?! :) (Don’t worry, I’m asking about a way of life; I definitely have taken whole weeks where I haven’t watched TV or gotten on the computer and I’m OK.) I wonder what I would do? Read more?! Just work more? I don’t know!

As I’m writing this, I’m thinking I might like to take a fast from TV this summer (after the playoffs are done of course!) and actually see what I do end up filling my time with. Honestly, I’m not sure that I would fill it with anything more productive. And my other “fear” is that I would just continue working on ministry things instead of taking the break which TV provides. But, maybe I’m wrong.

So, I’m writing here that after the NBA Finals are done in mid-June, I will embark on a 1-week fast (to start with) from TV, and report back on what I filled my time with. Call me on it!
