White Buffalo

The WHITE BUFFALO Salon was dreamed up by Deborah Bradley-Kramer, Liz Gill Neilson, and Duncan Neilson during long evenings while we discussed the wonders and wilds of music and art. We realized, however, that something was missing in the majestic urban wild of NYC, and in the country at large. Something vital and important was slipping under the cultural radar.

White Buffalo was born out of the realization that we humans have increasingly isolated ourselves within a world of artifacts that only reflect us back to ourselves. Ensconced in this hall of mirrors we have become oblivious to the wild, more-than-human reality upon which we depend for all our sustenance.

We decided to create our own salon to highlight what we felt was missing, and to become a gathering place of a community of people in a spirit of sharing ideas.

Through music, poetry, art, (and a great dose of humor), White Buffalo aims to re-open our eyes to the elemental earth, and re-open our ears and hearts and senses to the vast, animate Life whose rich rhythms surround us, (which are now disrupted and increasingly stifled by the toxic effects of our civilized oblivion).

We agree with Robert Greenway who feels that the new language of wonder and environmental awareness is MUSIC. And we’d like to add that this new way of speaking and visionary insight includes POETRY, STORY and ART.

We discovered the following story of the White Buffalo and it spoke deeply to us. It is message from the Others-our animal kin-the tribe of the white buffalo. Enjoy!

WHITE BUFFALO STORY

“Many suns ago, when my father’s father was a boy, we were at war with the Piutes. The warriors of both tribes were riding either crest of a narrow valley, shooting their arrows at each other. Through the gorge suddenly poured the buffaloes, thick as black smoke. Then, as though from the skies, appeared a white buffalo at their lead. The braves could not stay their bows; arrows entered the white buffalo from both sides.” p.15, Gregory Haimovsky, White Buffalo, (quoting The Passionate Journey by Irving Stone)

“…the book describes both tribes skinning and butchering the body of the white buffalo. And by doing this together, they reconciled, spending the night dancing and chanting. On the morrow, probably the moment they opened their eyes, the Indians detected that the white skin of the buffalo disappeared. It went back to its Maker. The symbol served its duty: both tribes were pacified forever.” p. 16 White Buffalo, Gregory Haimovsky
