Genuine Scooter Company is the sister company of Scooterworks in Chicago, IL. Initially importing the classic Vespa design from LML of India under the model name ‘Stella’, Genuine burst into the scooter market in 2003. The Stella is a Vespa PX 150 as built by LML in India. Unfortunately, labor issues in mid to late 2006 caused LML to close it’s doors, and end the run for the popular Stella.
Genuine though had another vendor lined up to provide an alternative. Partnering with PGO, a Taiwanese manufacturer with an excellent reputation in Europe and Asia, Genuine began importing the PGO BuBu into the United States as the Genuine Buddy. Coming both a 50cc and 125cc model, the Buddy has garnered excellent reviews and a near cult like following among it’s owners. Praised for it’s ‘cute’ looks and excellent ride qualities, the Buddy quickly filled the potential void that the Stella appeared to create in the Genuine product lines. As the year progressed in 2006, Genuine has continued to add additional models from the PGO product line renamed, and frequently re-branded with more US friendly colors.
Today, with three entries in the 50cc market, the Buddy (PGO BuBu), Black Cat (PGO PMX) and Rattler (PGO PMS), Genuine offers three excellent entries in the small scooter market. With the Buddy also in the 125cc market, they have another strong entry in the small end of the medium sized scooters. The addition of the Blur (PGO G-Max 105), a 150cc scooter designed for performance rounds out the small and small-medium range of scooters in the in the Genuine stable. It remains to be seen if Genuine will add any models to compete in the maxi ranges, of 250cc and above.
