Water and Climate Change

The American Metropolitan Water Works Association (AMWA) has issued a new report warning that climate change poses a serious threat to the safety and adequacy of drinking water supplies in the United States. Changes in temperature and precipitation have the potential to reduce annual precipitation, cause more droughts and more severe storms, increase evaporation from reservoirs and diminish the amount of water stored in snowpacks. All will increase the challenge of providing adequate supplies of clean drinking water to cities throughout the country, particularly in the arid west. Warmer water may also prove more difficult to purify and keep clean. The report calls for more research and more efforts to reduce warming.
