The House of Steel is located at 130 Mohegan Avenue, New London, in the southeast corner of Connecticut College’s campus, north of the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and across Route 32 (Mohegan Avenue) from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy. It sits beside another historic prefab, the Winslow Ames House, also commissioned by Winslow and Anna Ames. (See photo 1.) That house, erected in 1934 by the New York company American Houses, Inc., was rehabilitated in 1994 and today houses offices for the college and a tenant. Both buildings were acquired by Connecticut College in 1949.
