I just finished C. J. Mahaney’s excellent book, Humility: True Greatness. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen an author make so many book recommendations through the course of a book this size. Here they are: The Cross of Christ by John Stott The Enemy Within by Kris Lundgaard The Gospel for Real Life by Jerry Bridges Saved by Grace by Anthony Hoekema Sin and Temptation by John Owen Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald S. Whitney Systematic Theology by Wayne Grudem (particularly the section on God’s incommunicable attributes) He also referred to a few books, sometimes glowingly at other times just for illustration purposes: Good to Great by Jim Collins How Long, O Lord? by D. A. Carson Instruments in the Redeemer’s Hands by Paul David Tripp Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen Spiritual Depression by Martyn Lloyd-Jones Surprised by Laughter: The Comic World of C. S.
