I’m writing this from my in-laws house after evacuating our home and business when the floodwaters from the wetlands overtook our building with a record high tide in a matter of a few hours this morning.

In the morning I had to go the post office to mail our taxes and found army trucks blocking our road at both ends.   The water wasn’t too high at that point, but our yard was already a lake and the road was submerged in places.  I thought they wouldn’t let me back on to the road to return home, but they did.  But by noon when the tide reached high (extra high thanks to the new moon) I was frantically carrying gear and guitars out of my studio in a pair of hip waders.  That’s right, inside the building I was splashing through a foot of water thinking about how much time I had before it reached the electrical outlets.

I had prepared for this a little, by putting stuff up on blocks and getting anything valuable off of the floor on Sunday because we had a really good flood last spring when FEMA even got involved.  I thought this couldn’t be worse than that because it took weeks of heavy rain to gradually result in a few inches of water in our building last year.  Well, I was wrong.  By the time we left the building the water was already twice as high as last year.  My studio couch is currently submerged and I didn’t have time to get a collection of some pretty rare books out of that room.  But the important thing is we’re safe.

We grabbed our customer files so we can make calls and tell everyone that the dog daycare is closed for the week (so much for the tax return putting us ahead) and I convinced the state troopers that they could take their amphibious vehicle away, thank you very much, yes officer, I promise not to walk around in the electrically live water, we can get out by ourselves.

Ben, our dog, swam to the car and as I carried my pregnant wife through the lake that was once our parking lot, we had to laugh and say, “We must be having another one of those adventures!”

If you have any doubts about the effects of climate change, trust me, it’s getting worse every year, and for me, it’s a little too close to home.

An Inconvenient Tuesday
