San Pedro de Atacama, Chile Illustration Project Update, 2008

Here’s a quick update about what’s been happening as a result of my illustration project in San Pedro de Atacama.

Students of my 2004 and 2006 seminars have been passing on their knowledge of plant illustration to the local elementary school students in San Pedro de Atacama and in Socaire, a village 86 km from San Pedro. The Indigenous Association  of San Pedro de Atacama purchased basic kits of pencils, erasers, rulers, and magnifying lenses to teach the children the basics of plant illustration. Each child received a kit and instruction on depicting the local flora.

In May 2009, I will travel again to San Pedro de Atacama. In collaboration with the local indigenous association, I will help document plants that are used as natural dyes for sheep and alpaca wool. We will collect plants and make drawings and paintings for the future reference of the local community.

I am grateful to the community of San Pedro de Atacama for their support on this project.
