Mrs. Smilack's Thoughts on 1-1 Laptop Programs

I am so excited about the laptop program! As a member of the Educational Technology Leadership Team at Lovett, I have been able to be involved in the work to bring laptops to the classroom. The fact that 4th grade was chosen for this pilot program is THRILLING!

We live in world in which digital learning is key and technology is an integral part of children's lives. New generations learn differently. They have different needs. Laptops MEET these needs head-on. Through interactive, collaborative, and project based learning, students can explore and learn about the world around them. Students are on-task and engaged due to a change in their learning environment--laptops provide a differentiated instructional model. They help create an even more positive view about school and learning. Data shows that the kids who are 1 to 1 are better readers, writers, thinkers, etc. Our fourth graders will have the ability to access and manipulate information instantly. The possibilities are endless! I cannot even begin to tell you the hundreds of ideas that our 4th grade team has for integrating this technology into the classroom. Remember, the laptops are a tool for learning, they will not take the place of our curriculum--they will only enhance it. As teachers, we will guide students through this discovery and learning process--we will be there every step of the way to provide a SAFE learning environment for your children.

Calling all 4th grade parents - Please join us Tuesday, February 12 @ 8:30 a.m. in the lower school Multi-Purpose Room.  We will go over the laptop care and handling requirements for students and parents.  We ask that parents attend this meeting together with their child.  Parents will be asked to sign the Student/Parent Laptop Agreement before the laptop will be allowed to go home with their child.

You will also be invited to go into any of the 4th grade classrooms to view student work  and to have students share their new skills with you.  Don’t be surprised if they snap a photo of you in the process.
