the balanced jellyroll
The jellyroll is one the most basic of canes. I devised this method in order to create jellyrolls that have balanced centers - that is, the spiral begins in the center, and is equally strong in both colors.
If you make your jellyrolls this way, they will always come out the same.
Step One
Select two colors of clay. Roll each through the thickest setting of the pasta machine. Place one sheet atop the other and trim the 4 sides.
Step Two
I like jellyrolls with lots of spiraling. So, I rolled the two color sheet in step one through a medium setting, then a thin setting of my pasta machine.
Step Three
Fold the sheet in half and cut the open edge with a blade.
Step Four
From the fold, roll up tightly. Roll the cane lightly on your work surface to smooth.
