The original discussion for Kato Polyclay Color Concentrates occurred at a Clay Carnival some years back. Artist Lynne Ann Schwartzenberg was talking to our formulator, Tony Aquino and mentioned her wish to have “polymer clay food coloring”. Concentrated color that would mix easily into polymer clay.
Tony made them! They’ve been on the “back burner” for the last year or so but, as I was guaranteed that we would have them, I put them in my new book with a few color mix “recipes”. Robert and Tony were as good as their word(s) and here they are.
The first three colors are Concentrated Blue, Concentrated Red and Concentrated Yellow. Interestingly, when equal parts of the three are mixed, the result is black not brown.
They are packaged in 1.5 ounce packages - you use less of them than regular colors (I would not recommend using them alone) and because of the heavy pigment load, they are more costly to produce.
In texture, they are stiffer than regular Kato Polyclay. Just cut a slice from the block, flatten with your acrylic rod and roll through the pasta machine, then mix into your other clay.
With them, it is possible to achieve jewel tones in Pearl clay that do not lose their chatoyancy making them perfect for mica shift techniques. They are a wonderful addition to any clay studio.
