YOUTH

     Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind. It is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions. It is the freshness of the deep springs of life.

     Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.

     Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.

     When the aerials are down and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty. But as long as your aerials are up to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.

青春

青春とは年齢ではありません。心のあり方のことです。青春とはバラ色の頬、赤い唇、しなやかな膝を持っているかどうかではありません。どのような意志を持っているかであり、想像力の豊かさ、喜怒哀楽の活発さがどうかということです。青春とは生命の深き源から湧き出る鮮烈な息吹のことです。

青春とは卑怯に克つ勇気、安逸への愛着に克って新たな冒険に向かおうとする気持ちの溢れている状態のことです。それは20歳の若者よりも60歳の人物に宿ることがしばしばです。人が老いるのは単に歳の数だけよるのではありません。自分の理想を捨てることによって人は老いていくのです。

歳月は肌に皺を刻みますが、情熱を棄てることは魂に皺を刻みます。心配、恐れ、自己不信は心をねじ曲げ、精神を塵に変えてしまいます。

60歳であろうと16歳であろうと、すべての人間の心には不思議に魅了される気持ち、子供のように次を期待して止まない気持ち、ゲームのように人生を楽しむ気持ちがあります。あなたの心にも私の心にも見えない無線基地があるのです。その内なる基地が、人々から、そして無限の大いなる存在から、美しさ、希望、喜び、勇気、力のメッセージを受け取る限り、あなたは若さと共にあるのです。心のアンテナが下りている時、そしてあなたの精神が冷笑の雪と悲観の氷に覆われる時、たとえ20歳であろうと老いてしまうのです。

しかし、心のアンテナが上がっていて、最善観の波を受け止めようとしている限り、80歳であってなお青春を生きぬいて逝く希望に満ちているのです。

サミュエル・ウルマン（Samuel Ullman, 1840年 - 1924年）は、アメリカ合衆国の実業家（詩人、教育者）。ドイツ・ヘッヒンゲン (de:Hechingen) 出身。ユダヤ系ドイツ人であったため、迫害を避けアメリカへ渡る。 アラバマ州バーミングハムに住み、荒物商を営みながら執筆を続けた。80歳の記念に自費出版した『80歳の歳月の高見にて』に収められた詩"YOUTH"（青春）は名高い。この詩は第二次世界大戦後、アメリカの雑誌リーダーズ・ダイジェストに掲載され、連合国総司令官を務めたダグラス・マッカーサー元帥が座右の銘として執務室に掲げたことから、日本でも知られるようになった。経済界の先に立つ人物の間では古くから有名で、松下幸之助も座右の銘としていたと言われている。　（ウィキペディアからです。）
