Since this is a collection of songs over the last twenty years, it makes perfect sense that it doesn't have as coherent a feel as his other albums. This is more like a greatest hits or outtakes package, and it's got some really interesting stuff on it. Unfortunately, the CD is only half full, and runs about as long as an old LP would. (And still no sign of Brian Live!...)
Cold Harbour is just plain beautiful. It reminds me of Eno's gorgeous "Julie With..." but it has its own unique flavor. Recorded at home in '91 and then touched up a bit, it's every bit as good as the stuff on the I/You album.
You Can't Keep a Good Girl Down is happy and silly, like Never Join the Fire Brigade -and there's nothing wrong with that. You know it's so.
Even though these are home demos and rough mixes, they're a lot of fun to listen to. I really enjoy the intimacy of My Lady's Lament, with the Gay Blades' pleasant harmonies. You can't get this collection without ordering Brian's Big Box; it's a nice addition and complements the set of albums: shedding some light, filling in some spaces, and giving us some more wonderful tunes.
