This was my introduction to BP, from a DJ at a radio station in Lake Charles, LA. He insisted that I'd appreciate this - and he was absolutely right! I was hooked from the very first listen, with the clever word play of the title tune. There's that musical hiccup in "Every Roman Knows" that I haven't heard anyone else do before or since. And then there were guest stars: Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) plays flute on the Shakespeare poem set to music ("Greenwood Tree") and Simon Phillips (later in Eno's band 801, and the Who) plays drums on other tunes.
There's a perfect rendition of Little Richard's "Lucille," which came from the Leave Him to Heaven sessions. I'll cautiously invoke the name of Robert (King Crimson) Fripp and suggest that you compare this recording to "You Burn Me Up I'm a Cigarette" on his Exposure album. The production is similar, including the effects on Daryl Hall's vocal track, but three years later.
"Hotel" is my favorite song of his. At the end of the tune is a really interesting production effect simulating quad using stereo speakers. BP noted that he had to sing the loop, since the producer wouldn't loop it.
The album ends with "The Face and I" and it's a beautiful finish to this incredible series of albums, reminding me of the Beatles’ Abbey Road and "The End."
I know that I can't praise this particular album enough, and it frustrates me that a lot of people who would appreciate it will never hear it; this thing is beautiful, energetic, artful, funny, clever...and clearly one of my favorite records of all time.
• In 2005, I decided to try my hand at a mashup of “Hotel” and “Holyoke Hotel.” I think it came out OK!
