He is 7. And he is very good at tuning you out when he is focused on something. Most of the time, I assume he’s just spacing out. But, he’s been asking questions lately that prove this assumption wrong. This week he has been pondering the Big Bang theory and Creationism. He wonders if god made the earth, then who made the sun? And if we evolved, how did we get from a fish to a monkey? It makes for interesting dinner conversation.

It's fun and exciting!

Well, that does sounds fun and exciting. Hell, why not!

A girlfriend sent me this photo of George Hincapie before the opening day of the 2006 Tour of California. I don’t even want to think about how close she was to Georgie and the Discovery team while they were in San Francisco. As an amateur racer, 3rd in my priorities to mom/wife and career, I have a huge admiration for what I think is one of the most difficult sports on the planet. And come on, Georgie is so darling he’s the only person who looks handsome in those Rudy’s. To add insult to injury, Byron is on a business trip, with his bike and is in spitting distance to a race stage finish. If I was that close with bike in hand, I’d go to that race with a permanent marker, I’d find Georgie and I’d ask him to sign my top tube. He’d say to me “yeah, baby I’ll sign your tube tube top. At which point I’d have to fend him off and say, “Oh, no, Georgie, not my tube top, my top tube.”

Coyote Sighting

Sunday was a bit more of the same. I realized the restlessness was due in part by the fact it was the 41st wet day in 43 and the 2nd wettest January on record. Mid afternoon I was gazing out the front window like Sally from Dr. Suess’ Cat in the Hat. But instead of a cat visit, it was a canine. In front of me was a coyote, just strolling up the street. Initial thoughts were ‘hmm, what’s that dog doing loose? Oh, that’s not a dog, that’s a coyote. Geez, I’d better find the camera and snap a photo or no one is going to believe me.’ The delayed reaction is the cause of the crappy photo, but there is in fact a coyote behind the fire hydrant. The sighting was a good distraction from the restlessness and as soon as I knew it, I was back into the weekly work routine.

I’m feeling restless tonight for no good reason and giving some thought to that. I’m also giving some thought to the unraveling of james frey’s memoir . I believed him too. Sure, I feel duped, but not embarrassed. We get duped everyday. We need to remember to question when we doubt.
