Welcome!

Welcome to the Holyoke Civic Symphony’s website. Whether you are interested in
attending an upcoming concert, playing with the orchestra, or just finding out more
about us, I’m sure you will find our site helpful and enjoyable.

Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, and John Cage have long been considered composers of contemporary American music. But since we are well into a new century now, I think the term contemporary more properly belongs to the composers who are living and writing today. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of judging the Holyoke Civic Symphony’s biennial Composition Competition, and I was amazed and encouraged by the quality and diversity of today’s American composers. In fact, I was so impressed that I decided to make this season into a yearlong celebration of new American music—music which is every bit as alive, accessible, and profound as that of the great masters of the past.

All of our concerts feature an entertaining mixture of exciting and accessible new music,
along with fresh interpretations of familiar classics. No matter what your musical tastes
are, I think you will find Holyoke Civic Symphony concerts to be both enjoyable and
educational, with a consistently high level of musical excellence. I hope that you will
join us for this exciting season.
