Kyler’s Updates

We were supposed to be going upstairs for chemo this week for sure.  That’s what they told us last week.  Yet somehow we’re at home again.  Kyler’s platelet counts are still not up to where they would like them to be.  And “to avoid any unnecessary risks” we are waiting another week before moving forward with this round of chemo.  The good news is they will be significantly reducing his dosages from here on out.
Kyler and I tried to coax his platelets into cooperation by calling out to them, “Oh, little platelets.  Where are you?  Come out and play so I can go upstairs and get chemo.”  It apparently didn’t work.
Kyler was very disappointed (again), but he did the best he’s ever done with getting his port accessed.  In a flash of genius I thought, “How about we try not looking at the needle as it’s getting ready to go in”.  Kyler has been to worked up to try this in the past, but for two weeks now he’s been able to close his eyes as they are getting ready to poke him.  It’s almost comical.  His little body is all tensed up waiting for the ‘stick’ and it’s already in.  He has actually laughed at the nurse twice now afterward.  It’s a funny kind of relieved laugh.  The kind of laugh you let out just after you have scared the wits out of yourself by jumping off of a high place into water and you thought you were not going to make it but it turned out to not be that bad.  You know, that kind of laugh.
This break from chemo has been really nice.  Almost like it was before surgery.
He has gained a bit of weight.  He’s now 15.9 kilo’s.  To get the pounds figure, multiply 15.9 by 2.2.  There, you did a bit of math for the day.  Your teacher was right; you would use that someday outside the classroom.
This Saturday Kyler will shave a strip on Lis’ head at the Hard Knox skate shop in Lincoln for St. Baldricks.  Go to www.stbaldricks.org/kids to find out more.  You can type in Kyler’s name to find him and details about the event.  Pretty cool.

Blessings,

No, Really....Next time
