Chapter 3 - Third Crack Commandment.doc

HiYa, and welcome to www.fubiggie.com. I’m gonna make this simple. I’ve been writing this book I call Fuck You Biggie. Wasn’t sure what I wanted to do with it. Finally decided to post it, chapter by chapter, on the web. The first chapter was posted above on December 6, 2007. Every two weeks, a new chapter will be released. If you click on the Release Dates link, you can find the chapter release schedule (along with an additional link for each new chapter as it’s added). My reasons for releasing it online are simple:

    1) The reader feedback will keep me motivated to write.

    2) I wanted the book to have a community feel and be more of an interactive experience for the reader. I figured that every effective author captures a certain voice in his/her writing. And that voice often speaks for his/her generation, or at least a part of it. Just as any skilled DJ seamlessly weaves together the artistry of numerous musicians, a skilled author should be able to do the same with the joys, fears, hopes, concerns of his/her generation.

    3) Hip hop is a prevalent theme throughout the work just as it is a prevalent theme for our generation. Hip hop is very much collage art as it borrows elements from the past (i.e. the importance of the drum and rhythm in African musical traditions, kicks and snares sampled from old James Brown records, verbal dexterity found in the traditions of signifying and playing the dozens, and so on and so on) and re-contextualizes them to make them relevant in the present. I figured if this book were to ever truly embody hip hop, it would need to be a collage of voices, the sum of many unique thoughts and diverse perspectives.

That said, I encourage all interested readers to contact me on this website’s Blog or at fubiggie@gmail.com whether it be to offer insight or suggestions, point out inaccuracies or contradictions, suggest changes or edits, tell me you’re offended by something I wrote, or simply to let me know that I’m a really, really shitty writer. I will write back to everyone. Anybody who offers advice that I use, either in an edit of a previously released chapter or within a new chapter, will:

1) be added to the posted list of editors.

2) sent a free mix CD including all of the songs the main character of the novel references or listens to on his iPod throughout the course of the story (links to stream these songs will also be added next to the particular chapter they are referenced in).

3) be asked to send a headshot (you can be smiling, frowning, ice-grilling, whatever the hell you please, just make sure you give me some good headwear) as I will be compiling the faces of every editor in a collage that will make up the cover of the book when I eventually print it up and publish it. This is to let the reader know that the story contained within that jacket is not just a lone voice, but rather the voice of many. A metaphor of sorts, if you will.

4) and finally, assuming I actually ever do make any money off this book, 25% of my personal profit will be split evenly amongst all editors.

I apologize for the lengthy introduction. Hopefully, if you’ve read this far, you’ll actually attempt reading a chapter or two. Enjoy and spread the word.

One,
Johnny 5 aka Samus Aran
