Mistake #1 Letting a friend or relative DJ your reception.
Although their intentions are meant well, this often leads to disappointment and every time you see them you will relive that day. Besides, if they really are a good friend or relative, wouldn’t you rather they enjoy themselves on your wedding day than work?
Mistake #2 Shopping with “PRICE” the number one criteria.
Remember the saying, “YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR!” This goes double if not triple. Although price should be a concern, please don’t make it the number one concern.
Mistake #3 Not signing a contract.
Going on good faith most often leaves you with trouble right before the wedding date. They have to work their main job, their moving or perhaps they would rather go to the Bon Jovi concert than do your reception. A contract guarantees that your entertainer will be there for you and you will be there for them.
Mistake #4 Postponing till the end to hire an entertainer.
Your best entertainers typically book weddings one to two years in advance. Believing you can hire a good entertainer a few months before the wedding is not wise. Even during off months, good entertainers are filling up with other events. The sooner the better!
Mistake #5 Restricting the music to be played.
You’re hiring an entertainer to “entertain” everyone at the reception. This is why we play a wide variety of music from many decades and in an order that we believe will bring the most enjoyment to the most number of guests. By giving your entertainer a “Do Not Play List” of songs, you are eliminating songs your guests may want to dance to, and a reception is not the place to show all of your guests you two are into obscure music. You’re hiring the entertainer based on their skills, let them use them.
Mistake #6 “We want to get into Hip-Hop as fast as possible.”
No you don’t! Unless you want to turn the reception into a club scene and chase the majority of your guests away as soon as possible. There is a right time for everything. The best time for newer music is usually at the end of the evening when the older guests are exhausted from dancing and the younger guests are ready to part from the bar and head to the dance floor.
A Final Thought. If you hire ALL the right people, your wedding and reception will flow smoothly and truly be an evening to remember.
