Jericho Rosales is actually a quiet, unassuming guy. Surrounded by other stars, he won’t make an effort to stand out and be noticed. He’d sit quietly, plug into his iPod, silently enjoying his own music, waiting for his turn, while the others enjoy taking advantage of hugging all the attention from adoring people all around.
He’s probably tired of being in the limelight most of the time, and whatever respite he can get, he takes advantage of it.
And yet, even in a crowd of celebrities, it is hard not to notice him. He is friendly, he is accommodating, he is sharp, and he is ready with a smile whenever anyone calls out his attention. He just wants to take a back seat, lounging almost lazily, until his turn is called.
I would guess that putting on the white, iconic buds of his iPod is a way for him to gently signal that he wants some privacy, zoning out a little bit, before he resumes his caffeinated celebrity life where anyone and everyone he meets clamor for his attention.
His relaxed stance is actually deceptive. At least, I was deceived. When it was his time for the take in my studio, he easily straightens out and naturally springs to action. There’s no slow-starting with Jericho. He does what he needs to do whenever he needs to do it. He is always ready.
I think of Jericho as one of the most talented stars that I’ve had the opportunity to photograph, as well as the chance to watch on both the big and the small screen. I can describe him as a natural, and for a guy, is actually very sensitive. That sensitivity, and without airs, translates well into how he is able to captivate his audience.
I personally know many who adores Jericho. I couldn’t understand it at first, but then again, after a sitting with him, it’s easy to know why. It’s impossible for me to miss the point. I must be blind not to see it.
Jericho is one of my favorite male celebrity subjects. I wouldn’t mind doing a sitting with him again. Or, even standing.
Through the years, I’ve photographed countless male matinee idols in Philippine show business. Don’t make me count because I cannot recall exactly how many. In their own unique way, they are all interesting. Charming mostly, adorable yes, and I must admit, a lot of them are lovable even. In my personal list of top 10 male idols, Jericho Rosales ranks somewhere on top, alternating with 2 other pop stars whose force of personality, and handsome looks, makes my hormones rage. And yes, I vehemently deny that I get star-struck.
