Like many of you, if you are planning to observe Lent, I’ve been pondering what to do (or not do) for the next forty days. I didn’t want any grandiose gestures of self-sacrifice . . . which might make me feel like I’m doing so much.
I didn’t want to simply give something up that would tend to make me think of my own misery. I thought that I needed to carve out a time and practice that would also be filled with some good for my own benefit.
Not to give away the whole plan, which really didn’t come together until this morning, but I have decided to write a daily prayer for myself, and then thought I would share it too. So here’s my prayer of entry into Lent:
As you led Jesus into the wilderness, O God,
Lead us today into the humble practice of desiring You.
Remove us from our selfish appetites and cluttered worlds
to find the peace and joy of knowing You and your provision.

        In our fasting, refill us.
In our prayers, respeak to us.
        In our seeking, reclaim us.

To your glory be all our devotions. Amen.
