The Mammoth Mammuthus Primigenius, characterised by a hairy coat and long curved tusks, is now extinct: It belonged to the same family of mammals as the present day elephant. They lived from about 4.5 million years ago until 4,500 years ago.
In September 1992 at this quarry a drag line operator found a tusk about 10m deep in some water logged river sand. So we went along and built a replica of the tusk with a full size skeleton to boot. The sand sofa seen here was not real size - it was a new world record and contained roughly 350 tones of sand. Big enough for three fully grown mammoths to chillax on while waiting for the next ice age.
