Disney Does It For Free...

I didn’t expect this...

Reuters is reporting that Disney will be making streamed versions of its popular ABC TV programs available for free the day after they air on the network.

The streamed versions of these shows will contain commercials that the viewer cannot ‘fast forward’ through, giving Disney a way to commercialize this.

I think that Disney is starting to get the right pieces in place.   They have the initial broadcast, the free stream, the ‘for fee’ download, and the DVD sale.  What they need to adjust here is the pricing on the download component.  I think the model for TV programs should be for a season of a show - not individual episodes.  Since these downloads are pretty low resolution, they should be relatively inexpensive - maybe between $10-$15 for a full season.  I could also see a more expensive pricing structure that would be credited against the purchase of the DVD set.

It’s good to see one of the big media companies willing to take risks to try and figure this marketplace out.  With a little bit of tweaking, Disney may have a winning formula here.

I also think Steve Jobs had a big part in this.  I’ll let you know why in an upcoming post...
