Course Description:
Advanced Art is a one year course, consisting of Art 3P and Art 4P. Art 1P & 2P (Beginning Art) are  prerequisites for Advanced Art. This class meets the A-G entrance requirement for the UC/CSU system, as well as the graduation requirement for SCUSD.  Students in grades ten through twelve, who have completed Art 1P & 2P  may enroll in this course.  Advanced Art  is designed  for students interested in pursuing art as a career, or those interested in building upon the skills learned in Art 1P & Art 2P.   The course emphasizes the Elements of Art and Principles of Design. It covers a wide field of intermediate to advanced skills in design, drawing, painting, figure drawing, as well as experimentation with a wide variety of other media. This course will also require students to critique famous works of art throughout history.  Work outside of class will be required.  this may include: research of a particular artist, style or period of art.

Course Objectives:
Students will be able to use and identify the Elements of Art and Principles of Design in their work as well the work of others.  Students will develop knowledge and artistic skill in a variety of visual arts media and technical processes.  Students will explore the role of the visual arts throughout history and culture.  Furthermore students will analyze, interpret, and derive meaning from works of visual art.  Lastly, students will apply what they learn in visual arts to learning in other subject areas.

Course Requirements:
There will be approximately 6 major assignments per semester.   Students are expected to write a reflection upon the completion of each project.  Students will also be expected to participate in verbal critiques of their work, and that of others. Students will have a final project due at the end of each semester.  All students will be required to keep a sketch book.  The sketch book will be checked at least once per quarter.  There will be a Portfolio review at the end of each semester.

Grading:
There is a “3 project window” that applies to all major projects in this class. Meaning, you may turn in the current assignment, and  the two previous, with no penalty.  However, once an assignment has passed the “3 project window” you may not turn it in at all.

For example: If we are on assignment 5, you may turn in assignments 5, 4, & 3 with no penalty at all.  However, assignments  1 & 2 are no longer worth any points.  There is no partial credit for half finished projects. You must complete the entire project to receive credit.

Grade Scale:
The percentage scale is based upon the total  points for all projects over the course of the semester.
100 -90%  = A    89-80% = B                    79-70% = C                    69-60% = D                    59-0% = F

Attendance:
Students are expected to come to class, on time, ready to work each day.  If a student is tardy without a valid note/pass they will be required to serve detention.  Detention will be served before 8:15 am in the morning, at the beginning of the lunch period, or immediately after school. Five unexcused tardies may result in Saturday School.
