I've just concluded an intense 4 days of fishing with my brother including a 34 hour stint on the boat when we didn't set foot on land. Creig is a wildlife fisheries specialist by training, and a county extension agent by trade in Grundy County Tennessee. He's a very good fishermen, fresh off back-to-back tournament wins down south. We've fished together since were kids. He's 13 years younger than me so I'm quick to say I taught him all he knows. Truth told, it was our dad who did the teaching. And another truth is that all my solo fishing trips are rehearsals for when I'm fishing with my family & friends. We just dropped him at the airport so I've kicked back on the deck reflecting on our weekend with an ice cold 'Boh and Townes VanZandt on I-Tunes.
We covered the Bay this week from Cove Point to Port Deposit. I'm not going to mention fishing spots, but I'm happy to answer any questions and I try to return all email. Highlights include a double hook up with 25 pounders on top-water at sunrise, and a mid-bay LTJ/top-water bite (today) that included breakers with sea lice beneath birds. Yes, smack in the middle of the MSSA tournament we were jigging dozens of 30”+ rockfish in shallow water and there was not another boat around.
I wish I could say it was always that way. Over the 4 days there were times when it was a fish every cast, and times when we went hours without a strike. That's fishing. Someone asked a while back if it was possible to fish through trophy season without trolling. My answer was yes, but it's a challenge and you have to bring your game to the fish. We brought it.
Here's a top-water video we shot right at sunset last Wednesday. We got lucky because that bite turned-off the next day. The muisc is by some friends in a band from East Tennessee called the ReelTime Travelers:
