What is the shrine like?

I can sense that I’m going to start to sound like a broken record when I talk about these shrines, but I can’t help but saying that this shrine is incredible. It really shows how sacred art raises our hearts and minds to God. In fact, after spending time here, you—like I—might even find it hard to leave, it’s such a peaceful place. Everywhere you look, you are reminded of the Queenship of Mary and of Christ’s love for us. The fact that the shrine is rarely (if ever) empty, shows that many faithful turn to Mary and her Son at all times in their lives. Those of us who do it often know that we are always heard.

The main shrine is simply glorious—there’s no other word for it. I could stare at the statue of Mary for hours. The lower shrine is also stunning, but in a different way, stylistically. The stations of the cross are some of the most amazing ones I think I’ve ever seen—here and in Europe! And the Masses and novena services are celebrated by Redemptorist priests (they run the shrine) lovingly and prayerfully. Oh, and don’t miss hearing the shrine’s cantor sing—her name is Mary, and her voice is sweet and joyful.

If you can make it for the solemn novena services in November, I highly recommend it, but really, a trip to this shrine during any time of year is well worth it.

What’s nearby?

The neighborhood surrounding the shrine doesn’t have many touristy places to visit, but if you have a car, there are a few nice neighborhoods you can travel to within a short distance.

The Mt. Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia is just north of the shrine, while hip and happenin’ Chestnut Hill can be reached by driving north on Germantown Avenue. When you’re there, be sure to visit the Night Kitchen Bakery and tell them I sent you! They made the scrumptious cupcakes for our wedding—I can’t recommend them more highly!

Roxborough and Manayunk are just southwest of the shrine, where you can also find a pretty lively restaurant scene.

How’s the parking situation?

Spectacular. The Shrine has a nice parking lot right behind the church. Check out the shrine’s website for directions.

I took these photos during our many visits to the shrine.
