ASARO - arte popular OAXACAN ASSEMBLY OF REVOLUTIONARY ARTISTS ASARO BACKGROUND: The Oaxacan Assembly of Revolutionary Artists was born in response to a call from the Popular Assembly of the Peoples of Oaxaca (APPO), to create APPOS in every discipline, with the goal being that all sectors would organize themselves to resist and unite in the struggle against the tyranny of a government that represents the interests of the wealthy…. The first meeting with all of the artists’ collectives, independent artists, folk artists and creators from a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines took place in October, 2006. Stencil artists, graffiti artists, printmakers, painters, photographers, videographers, theater artists, designers, cartoonists, etc. W e c a l l f o r: The pursuit and development of a New and Free art, committed to our people who live in resistance, oppressed and alienated by the individualistic culture, decadent in every sense, that has been imposed upon them. We also call for the creation of spaces where our children and youth can develop their artistic creativity. W e p r o m i s e t o : Take our artistic expression to the streets, to popular spaces, to raise consciousness about the social reality of the modern form of oppression that our people face. The Content of our artistic creations will be simple and straightforward, facilitating a dialog between the creator and the spectator; our artistic acts and creations will also become increasingly participatory. Each one of us will fight for a unified, self-sustainable, democratic, critical and self-critical assembly, sensitive and committed to our people’s just demands. ...spreading the truth will set us free
