Advance the Kingdom
Advance the Kingdom
“The kingdom of God,” Marcus Borg explains, “is what life would be like on earth if God were king. It is God’s dream as dreamed by the great figures of the Jewish tradition: Moses, the prophets, and for those of us who are Christian, Jesus. It is a dream for the earth.” This dream is concerned with the poor and needy and oppressed.
In Jesus’ parables about the kingdom, Jesus stands our idea of significance and status on its head. Those who seem insignificant in this world seem to have immense significance in the kingdom of God. Jesus expects his followers to treat the poor and the hungry in the same way they treat him. “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these, you did it to me” Matthew 25:40.
Advancing the Kingdom of God means working to bring the Kingdom on earth and making God’s dream a reality. YOS and YOI will work at this endeavor by serving the hungry and the homeless while praying for the Kingdom of God to come.
St. Francis said, “Preach the Gospel always, use words only when necessary.” In order to fulfill the purpose of evangelism, YOS and YOI will advance the Kingdom by serving the hungry and homeless at the Food Bank at Our Saviour Center.
On the second Saturday of every month, YOS will participate in Service Saturdays, which will primarily involve service at OSC Food Bank.
