“...(Dario Fo’s) Mistero Buffo for the New World”,
Il Teatro Machiavelli brings good old-fashioned popular theater back to its political roots--it’s satire that’s fun for everyone!
Part II:
The Prince
Part True Crime Story. Part Political Satire. All Puppets.

Audiences and Critics Alike Raved at its 1996 World Premier (Center for Puppetry Arts, Atlanta):

“wonderfully reminiscent of a Punch and Judy Show”

“much more interesting than the actual story...”

“...I came tonight to have fun, not to hear someone trash my faith.”
Bruno’s expertise in leading his company as they improvise their way through a traditional commedia scenario makes this trip through 400 years of theater history a rollicking good time for everyone.  By examining the political underpinnings of this enduring popular performance style, Bruno then sets the stage for the next piece…
Niccoló Machiavelli’s slim volume for how to achieve and maintain political power is given new life in the hands of his Great-great-great-great (you get the idea) Grandson, Bruno Machiavelli. The show focuses on the exploits of a particularly corrupt papal dynasty (the Borgias) which was a primary object of Machiavelli’s study.  By adapting the how-to manual as a Punch-and-Judy-style puppet show, the political nature of that ‘kiddie-show’ tradition is highlighted, as are the timeless messages inherent in Machiavelli’s work.  All the traditional elements of a Punch and Judy show are present, including:  a wife, the Devil (sort of), a deadly reptile, and a big stick.  This is a true story--true to history, true to Machiavelli.  Except that in the end, the Italians win.
