Many drummers DO NOT start with a drum set, they start with a pair of sticks, a practice pad, and some music. Since drums have a high “cool” factor, I recommend waiting a few months to see if the student is serious. The good news is, a drum set is relatively cheap, $500-600 will get you a very nice kit that will last a lifetime. Compare that to a tenor saxophone which costs $1800!

DO I HAVE TO BUY A DRUM SET?

Yes, without question! The same musical decisions and considerations that a horn or piano player make, are also made by a drummer.

ARE DRUMS MUSICAL?

Practice pads are silent and drum sets can be 95% silenced with special pads called “Sound Offs” that cost about $60 and are available at most music stores.

ARE DRUMS LOUD?
