Bathtime: Water Play
Bathtime: Water Play
2008
What really matters- Exchanges during daily routines- eg Bathtime. Whit loved bathtime and dramatic effects of splashing always seemed to intrigue her. She showed me what gave her the most excitement. So I followed her lead.
How to put it into practice- When the water was low she could splash better with her feet (see “foot splash” video). She loved seeing the big visual effect of the splash and the tactile sensation of it landing on her skin. Although the bar on her bath chair made it harder for her to get her arms around, she could splash with her hands better as the water level rose (see “hand splash” vid). She could compare her the effects of her hand vs. her foot splashes. She also learned that to grab something in water is much different than grabbing things sitting on a hard floor (see “floaties” vid). Water does not provide the resistance of the wooden floor and the floaties would move away from her. We had rich exchanges around each of these adventures.
