Scribbles
2008
What really matters- Foundations for Writing- Those early scribbles help set solid foundations for future symbol use and writing. The roots of drawing, writing and other notational systems lie in those little squiggles, as does the ability for sustained attention. No matter how we generate marks using nature, sands, pencils, markers, paints, key boards or light pens, we use them to think and reflect. Scribbles help your child practice and organize shapes or patterns. Children instinctively build up images and text with lines, dots, curves, spirals, and other geometric shapes.
How to put it into practice-
Tuning In- Notice how social reinforcement even plays a roll in the Pen Scribbles video. Whitney loves her praise and even claps for herself with my enthusiastic encouragement.
Bridging- Provide lots of invitations for your child to make marks whether with a pen, marker, paint brush or outside with a stick in the mud or on a beach. Help your child notice and reflect on the shapes they create. Point out a bold line, a smooth curve, and any shape that strikes you. Cheer her on to positively support her efforts at making marks.
