Louie Silvestri is Director of Orchestras at Fossil Ridge High School, where he conducts the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and teaches the AP Music Theory course.  He comes to FRHS Most recently from teaching orchestra at Loveland High School and Erwin Middle School.


Mr. Silvestri received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from the Oberlin Conservatory, and a Master of Music degree in Instrumental Conducting from Colorado State University.  In addition to his position at Fossil Ridge High School, Mr. Silvestri also teaches the orchestra classes at Preston Junior High School, and is the conductor of the Loveland Orchestra.  He is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the Colorado Music Educators Association, Pi Kappa Lambda, the Conductors Guild, and the American Symphony Orchestra League

Orchestra Courses for 2009-2010



Sinfonietta - 9th grade Orchestra

The Sinfonietta is the entry-level course offering for all 9th grade intermediate orchestra students.  There is no audition required for this ensemble.  Students wishing to be considered for placement into symphony orchestra should contact Mr. Silvestri to schedule and audition.  The Sinfonietta will perform as a string ensemble only and is designed to meet the needs of 9th grade string students.  Advanced techniques of bowing, fingering, and tone production are pursued through the study of orchestral literature ranging from Early Baroque through Contemporary and popular styles.  Orchestras perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

Concert Orchestra

The Concert Orchestra is the entry-level course offering for all 10th grade orchestra students, and for junior and senior orchestra students who have not yet displayed the technical and musical skill development necessary for placement into Symphony Orchestra.  There is no audition required for this ensemble.  Students wishing to be considered for placement into symphony orchestra should contact Mr. Silvestri to schedule and audition.  The Concert Orchestra will perform as a string ensemble only and is designed to meet the needs of intermediate string students.  Advanced techniques of bowing, fingering, and tone production are pursued through the study of orchestral literature ranging from Early Baroque through Contemporary and popular styles.  Orchestras perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

Symphony Orchestra

The Symphony Orchestra is designed to meet the needs of advanced string students, regardless of grade-level.  All students are placed into Symphony Orchestra through an audition with the Director. Advanced techniques of bowing, fingering, and tone production are pursued through the study of orchestral literature ranging from Early Baroque through Contemporary and popular styles.  Orchestras perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

How to Register for Orchestra

  1. BulletStudents wishing to be considered for the Symphony Orchestra (regardless of grade-level) should contact Mr. Silvestri to schedule a placement audition.  All selected students should register for Symphony Orchestra.

  2. BulletSophomores, Juniors, and Seniors not placed into the Symphony Orchestra should register for Concert Orchestra.

  3. BulletFreshmen not placed into Symphony Orchestra should register for Sinfonietta.
