Karen DeVries is Director of Choirs at Fossil Ridge High School, where she conducts the Women’s Choir, Mixed Choir, and Jazz Choirs.  She is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado, and has taught in the Poudre School District her entire career.  In 1994, Karen had the opportunity to be a member of the first staff of Preston Junior High School.


In addition to her position at Fossil Ridge High School, Mrs. DeVries also teaches the choir classes at Preston Junior High School, and is a member of the Music Educators National Conference, the Colorado Music Educators Association, and the American Choral Directors Association.

Women’s Choir

Women’s Choir is open for all female voices.  At FRHS, the Women’s Choir is designed to give students with an interest in singing an opportunity to explore the singing voice through the performance of quality choral literature, and will include the study of the vocal mechanism, music theory, and history.  This class will provide a strong choral foundation that will enable students to confidently transition to a Select Choir.  Choirs perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside of the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.


Men’s Choir

At FRHS, the Select Women’s Choir will perform repertoire of the highest quality, and will include the study of the vocal mechanism, music theory and history.  Placement into Select Women’s Choir is through audition with the Choir Director.  Choirs perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside of the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.


Select Mixed Choir

At FRHS, the Select Mixed Choir will perform repertoire of the highest quality, and will include the study of the vocal mechanism, music theory and history. Placement into Select Mixed Choir is through audition with the Choir Director.  Choirs perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside of the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.


Jazz Choir

At FRHS, the Jazz Choir is a select ensemble comprised of up to 16 members. Placement into Jazz Choir is through audition with the Director, and student must be a member of one of the Concert groups.  Students are required to have a solid background in basic choral techniques.  The group specializes in pop, jazz and Broadway idioms.  Students will furnish all of the performance attire.  Choirs perform within the school, community, and at state-level events that may require time outside of the school day.  Attendance at all rehearsals and performances is required.

How to Register for Choir

  1. BulletAll students interested in participating in the FRHS Choir program are asked to contact Mrs. DeVries to schedule a basic placement assessment.

  2. BulletStudents wishing to participate in the Select Mixed Choir, Select Women’s Choir, or Jazz Choir should contact Mrs. DeVries for audition materials.

  3. BulletAll students will be notified of the ensemble placement following the conclusion of auditions.
