During the summer of 2006, I traveled to Spain to visit its northern and southern borders. This was a wonderful opportunity to observe and learn about the dynamics of regional integration in the European Union, as well as Spain’s cross-border challenges. In an increasingly globalized world, Spain faces many of the same trans-border challenges as the United States and Mexico: trade regulation, large scale migration, money laundering, drug-trafficking, and terrorism. These photos capture some elements of Spain’s culture, society, and cross-border relationships.
