Our second stop was the 15 year old collaboration between HSPH and Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS) in Dar es Salaam Tanzania,  This collaboration, originally started by Dr. Walter Willett’s visit there as a medical student, has blossomed into a substantial research enterprise head by Prof. Wafaie Fawzi in the Nutrition Dept.  There they oversee over a dozen clinical trials, in HIV positive and negative mothers and children, mostly of vitamins, micro-nutrient supplements, and anti-retroviral treatment and the effects on birth outcomes and child growth.
