proof is in the sea - captain kidd’s cannon
Took a few days to get the video out of the underwater camera. Here it is! Seven minutes of highlights where many of the 26 cannon are visible. There’s a few scattered fore and aft...and in the middle is a triangular stack with cannon stacked muzzle to breech...just like Kidd would have done. The IU dive team measured 10 of them and there’s one place in the video where they realize that the cannon are in two sizes, just like Kidd’s over-under cannon banks. You’ll see that part when Fritz swims up to Charlie (who’s shooting video at the moment) to show him the clipboard with the measurements. I was nearby and could actually understand their underwater talking...although it seems a little garbled here. This is very likely the remains of the Adventure Prize, Capt. Kidd’s last ship...burned and released to the sea by those who feared authorities would soon be after his crew and cohorts.
At one point, Charlie shows me how the cannon have been laid on a bed of old and broken anchors...14 of them...perhaps originally to keep the usable cannon way from bilge water that accumulated in the bottom of the boat. Heh...it didn’t work...
We then discovered that the shoreline had been eroded below the surface, making underwater passageways that led to inland grottos. The wave action and tides seem to push relentlessly into these areas, so the team made an initial survey of them, as well...thinking that many parts of the remaining hull and its lighter contents may have ended up there. Fritz found stones likely made of basalt that are not commonly found down here. It’s probably evidence of rock used for ship ballast. The team saved one about the size of a large grapefruit for testing (I didn’t wear enough weight for the dive, so I stuffed it in my wet suit..which probably looked pretty strange...but it was just what I needed to stop bobbing like a cork). If it came from Asia, it probably belonged to the Adventure Prize since that ship was constructed in the far east.
Even before returning to the boat, Nicole, Fritz, and Charlie discussed how to temporarily remove sand in and around these grottos to see if any wood or other artifacts may have been preserved that would further remove doubt that this is indeed Captain Kidd’s last ride. The mission continues...
