Misrepresentin’

I admit I’m angry, perhaps not the best time to blog. Last week an official publication of the PCUSA, Perspectives published an article entitled; Presbyterians and Separatist Evangelicals: A Continuing Dilemma. Many folks, more eloquent than I have pointed out its monumental flaws. Read Viola Larson, and Winfield Casey Jones for the most methodical rebuttals. And even they only touch the surface. As thoughtful and irenic a man as Dr. Richard Mouw has weighed in with his thoughts, and they aren’t good.

It was poor scholarship. It was as if the author had never met an evangelical in his entire life, let alone spoken to or read any in the course of writing his paper. It was a piece worthy of the Presbyterian Publishing Corporation in its ridiculousness.

I’ve been told I need to trust more. I find that assertion patently false. I do trust. I trust those who believe orthodox Christian beliefs regarding the personal nature of our trinitarian God,  the two natures of Christ, the nature of the atonement, scripture’s authority, etc.. to be outdated at best, and oppressive at worst, will continue to believe and promote this. I trust these are sincerely held beliefs. They just aren’t mine nor the congregation’s I serve, nor the official beliefs of the denomination, according to our Book of Confessions.

Rant over...
