Today was the warmest day of the year... so far. I had a funeral this morning, with 75 people coming back to the church for lunch. It was my third funeral in seven days. I was pretty peopled out. We have a 5.30 pm Saturday evening ‘casual’ worship service. The power went out at 4.55 pm. Did I mention it was the hottest day of the year?
Where we have the Saturday service is dark. Its in the basement hall. With no power on the hottest day of the year. My son plays the electric guitar, my wife the piano, another youth in the church, the drums. Once the power went out, my middle son lit candles at the tables, and we bagged the electric guitar. There was no power for the songs on the screen. But the hall looked really cool- somewhere between a Mediterranean restaurant and a Monastery. Both mysterious and inviting. The atmosphere made you speak in hushed tones, but it was intimate. Did I mention it was the hottest day of the year.. with candles?
I threw in the towel -- had an impromptu prayer meeting, in the dark, with candles, on the hottest day of the year. God is in heaven, and man is on the earth- therefore let your words be few. It helps when the sweat is dripping of your nose and running down your back.
When we got home, our power was out also. It was 80F + in the house. Last week at Dierbergs I found a locally brewed wheat beer with peach mixed in, named Wheach beer. Seriously. I had two.
On nights like this, two opposing thoughts vie for my allegiance - did I get it so wrong on my sermon over the week, that God was protecting his people from my foolishness? Or, when I’m feeling my oats a bit, (after two Wheach beers) did I get it so right- that Satan had to kill to the power? Who really prompted David to take a census?
I don’t know, but I do know this. Fruit and beer go very well together. And God is good, all the time. Especially on the hottest day of the year.
