I broke chain letters when I was a kid. I never forward on those annoying forwards we all receive. I am a black hole when it comes to that stuff. I have begun to resent people adding me as a ‘friend’ to their facebook sites. Just send me an email-- I don’t want to get ‘poked’ or to ‘poke’ anyone over the internet, thank you very much. My 16 yr. old son says mockingly, “Dad, you’re just a Web 1.0 guy, in a 2.0 world, aren’t you?” Smart aleck... kids these days...
But, alas- there is one person who can roust me from my curmudgeonly dystopian internet ludditeness (this blog does find its inspiration in Psalm 137, after all), the wife. She tagged me yesterday with the following ...
You've been tagged: The idea… it’s a game of tag with a difference, rather than looking inwardly, we look outside ourselves and bless, praise and pray for one blog friend. By participating in this endeavour we not only make the recipient of the blessing feel valued and appreciated, but we are having some fun too. We’re going to see how far the bloggin’ blessings can travel around the world and how many people can be blessed!
Well, I’ve thought about this a bit-- and I’m uncertain how to proceed. I read this man, religiously- but well, he doesn’t seem to be the type that needs validation, martyrdom will do that to you, I suppose. My Consistory friends I read consistently, appreciate and value- a surprisingly diverse group of faithful Presbyterian friends, and a large part of the reason I continue to blog. But they already know what I think about them. Plus, I wouldn’t want their heads to get too big. Except for Viola, she’s got humility in spades and the courage to match. God works that way, it seems.
So.. three people I want to bless, who bless me more than they know when I read their blogs, in no particular order...
Robert Austell’s Lighthouse/Searchlight church. Read this guy. He loves God and he loves people. He’s got some significant things to say regarding the nature of worship, the nature of our triune God of grace, and the intersection of these in church and in the world.
Jim Berkley’s The Berkley Blog. Kids, listen to what Berkley says. He blogs even less than I do, but unlike me (rightly so), when he does people take note. There are very few people I know who can calmly, with logic and with Christian compassion report and write on difficult issues, and make them understandable for us slow kids. He’s both wise and courageous, and has the wounds to prove it. Plus, all the right people despise him, as part of of the vast right wing conspiracy. What’s not to like?
Paul Merrill’s My Part of Colorado. It is the fortunate few who can count friend’s such as Paul. He was green before it was hip, has a redemptive eye, and a profoundly convicting biblical world-view, cultivated through living cross culturally for much of his adult life. Read his blog for three weeks, and see if you don’t agree with me. He’s an artist who works for Wycliffe Bible Translators. And, he has superlative taste when it comes to beer and coffee.
Robert, Jim, Paul, consider yourselves tagged.
