What’s all this 1111 stuff?
What’s all this 1111 stuff?
There’s that 1111 number again!
Once again the number 1111 or 111 jumps into my life. This has been happening for a few years, now. When I first heard other people talking about it, I thought it was weird, and they were probably just noticing it more than they should, but now I am seeing it. Every time it happens, I think about writing something about it, but then I think, “naw, it can’t happen again, so why bother”.
Well, I guess I am going to bother. I will write it here on this page, and if it happens enough to make this page too big, or if other people send a lot of comments about it, I will start a separate blog for it.
Maybe this is the last time it will happen, or maybe not. Time will tell. A few times, I actually did write down how and when it happened, and if I find those notes, they will also be posted here.
Here is the first note I found, from 2006. Apparently it was going on back then, farther back than I remembered. There are more, if I can turn them up.
The clock on the microwave oven said "11:10" when I started a 20 second warmup on a tortilla, and I realized that the number "11:11" was sure to show up on the clock when the tortilla was done, unless it was still "11:10". I have seen that number pop up many times lately, and even twice in the same day sometimes. When the oven went beep, I opened it and the clock was saying "11:12"!! There is no way a 20 second warmup could have spanned over a minute. Where did minute number "11:11" go? Did I somehow lose a minute of time between the beep and when I actually opened the door? Woooooo!! Weird!, especially when the number "1111" is involved again!!!! Did the Aaaalienzz abduct me for a minute?? Did I momentarily step into another dimension, and then forget about it? Did God just kick the clock forward for his own reasons? Did I just lapse out of consciousness while standing for a minute? you can't make this kind of stuff up! I might have thought to make up a story about that number popping up in some strange way, but never would have thought to make up a story about it not being there when it should be! This happened on October 5, 2006. I have seen weird things involving this number before, but this is the best yet!
Something is going on with this, and I have no idea what. I have looked it up on the net and found that many people have many different opinions about it. I just don’t have a theory, at present, but maybe more will be revealed. Since it does appear to tweak probability quite a bit, I wonder if it is somehow connected with my keen interest in consciousness, and its apparent effects on this material world. (Check out this link for the biggest experiment that I know of in this field) It is my understanding that a psychedelic experience, particularly with DMT or salvia can make this happen much more frequently for weeks afterward. Whoa. Not the kind of experiment I would recommend for everyone, but it makes you wonder. Terrence McKenna was very interested in these numbers , and that may be why. There are many web sites about this, and most of them appear to be very new age or native. George Noory, the new host at Art Bell’s old radio show also talks about it a lot.
When I first noticed it in my life, it spooked me a little, but now it makes me laugh. It seems harmless, and I have a feeling that it is a message not to worry about things, because they are more under control and less chaotic than they appear. Just a feeling, but who knows?
As far as I know, this is a very new phenomenon, and did not appear until very recently, just the last 20 years or so. It did not figure in Spiritualism or relatively new religions such as Christian Science. I may be wrong about that, but that’s what I recall.
I have also noticed that the number 1138 pops up more often than it should, and so do numbers like 222 and anything that has combinations of ones and twos, but not nearly as often as 111 or 1111.
Again, this may be the last time it happens, but I promise I will post the story here if it does. There’s all those theories, but who knows which one, if any, is the right answer, kind of like religion.
By the way, if I see any of this on a new age site, I don’t bother to talk about it here, because it is very likely to be mentioned on sites like that. It is not a big surprise if it shows up there. Even this site, which is only partly a new age theme, but many other things as well, has 11:11 featured prominently on the front page, (At least on the broadband part) but with a name like “shamanic turtle” you might expect something like that. I use both the name and the references to these numbers because I find them interesting, and they do fit well with what I am doing with my music. It is also true that something very interesting is going on in this area, and I have klutztumbled into it, whether I meant to or not. Ten years ago I would have never believed that I would be doing some of the things I do now. I was kind of interested in it, but very skeptical. Now I am a lot less skeptical than I used to be, and a lot more interested.
So here it is, as of September 8 2008
9-8-08 about 2 PM Saw 111 on Intrade site. Not too exciting, because this site is numbers, numbers, and more numbers.
9-17-08 Stumbled across a reference to Swissair flight 111 on a site while searching for more info about Lehman and AIG.
9-19-08 I just happened to walk into the kitchen at 11:11 AM, according to the clock on the microwave.
9 21 08 Guess what time it was when I went to that microwave oven to warm up a cup of coffee after a long phone call. Yup, 11:11, so I went immediately to the computer, started it up and posted this. I have heard some people say that at a subconscious level, we have a clock that knows exactly what time it is, to the minute, and so we program ourselves to be in front of a clock when this time comes up. It seems to me that this is just an attempt to explain an anomaly with another anomaly. I have heard skeptics do this sort of thing before. Whatever.
9-22-08 I found MUFON’s web site, and while I was looking at it, a new report popped up. (They have a map feature with the 20 most recent reports located on the map, with live updates.) I could not help but notice that the longitude of the sighting was -111, in Arizona. It seems like I am getting a lot of these lately, or am I spending too much time on the net.(about 2 hours today, including deleting spam)
9-24-08 While finishing up a video project, I noticed the last still shot I put in, right in the last few seconds, was numbered “still 111”. These arbitrary names are created for still shots you create, and they stay that way unless you change the name to something else. I didn’t actually notice the name until I dragged the still to the sequence window. This video was “The Message”, which is very “new age” and possibly channeled. That makes it even more interesting. By the way, I don’t claim to be a channeler but at times I wonder if all highly creative people are using that as one of their sources. Maybe we are not creating nearly as much as we think. That’s very humbling if it’s true.
9-26-08 This is getting weird. I was riding a bicycle in a park, and passed a brick building that I remembered passing a few times before, Then I noticed the number 1111, made with those metal numbers that you can get at the hardware store. It was on the corner of the building. As I rode away, I heard a guitar playing behind me and went back. There was a young man playing a song that I used to play when I was young, and I started to talk with him about that. Then, suddenly I was awake in bed at 2:30 in the morning. Yup, the whole thing had been a dream. It was the first time I had seen one of these numbers in a dream. I never heard of this before. I am not sure how to count this, because, obviously, anything can happen in a dream, and that makes it a lot less meaningful, I think. I have never seen that building in real life, and I was riding a conventional bicycle in the dream. The one I usually ride in real life is a recumbent.
On top of that, the phone rang while I was writing this, and when I was done with the call, the clock on the microwave oven said 11:11 again. Wow. This really is getting weird.
9-29-08 While doing software updates on my Mac, I noticed that the version number on one of the programs was “1.1.1”. This is for system X, which has been around for a few years and the versions don’t usually start with the number 1 anymore. When working with a computer, one is far more likely to see an interesting number than most other places, because computers use a lot of numbers, but it still seems that there is a very strong preference for 1111 and 111. I have seen more numbers with ones and twos lately, but I don’t know if I should bother to count those here. The longer the list of numbers you are looking for, the more likely you will find one. Obviously, this would be a lot less interesting if we were using binary numbers, as everyone did with the very early digital computers.
This is now 9 occurrences in 24 days, averaging slightly more than one every 3 days.
After I wrote this, I started reading an article about consciousness, and one point in the article was illustrated using numbers. The author chose to use 3 digit binary numbers, and you can guess what turned up. Here is the URL, but it takes some serious effort to read it.
9-30-08 Today a friend suggested I look at the Palin bet on the Intrade site, and so I did. At the top of the window, it said the time was 11:11, but it was really 3 in the afternoon. Then I remembered the server for this site is in Ireland. The time zone difference from there to here is probably enough to account for that.
By the way the next congress which we will elect will be the 111th congress. I was reminded of that when I saw it on an internet site today. It just now occurs to me to wonder about the possibility of 1111 related synchronicities showing up in places where everyone sees them, not just a few people like me. Remember the New York state lottery where the number was 9-1-1 on the anniversary of that happening. I am probably not the first person to think of this as a possibility.
10-2-08 A Youtube video was one minute and eleven seconds, I noticed it after watching two others. Is there something about these computers that makes it happen more often? You are more likely to see numbers when using one, but it still seems to pop up a lot, even with that.
10-6-08 A pickup truck passed me on the freeway, and it looked like the last four digits on the plate were 1111. It was moving very fast, so I am not sure. This one is a maybe.
10-14-08 saw 1.11 several times on a site that tries to predict who will be the next President. I have been seeing a lot of 1 and 2 numbers lately and 1138, but 1111 numbers are now a lot less frequent than they were for a while. Notice the lack of an entry for over a week. Kind of like it was at the beginning of this, from September 8 to September 17. It looks like the frequency of occurrence is going back down to a more normal level. I would not want to make any predictions about this. I don’t understand the pattern behind it, so I’ll just observe.
Later...
Or maybe it isn’t. I just opened a little project I finished early in the afternoon, and couldn’t help noticing that the time that it was put away was exactly 1:11 PM. I was not looking at the clock when I put it away or I would have noticed it then.
By the way the now famous October 14 UFO prediction apparently did not happen. If I was given something like that, through a dream or whatever, I would be reluctant to announce it to the world just for that reason. Even more so if it was something awful like another 911. I would not want someone to think I had something to do with it, if it actually happened as predicted. This 1111 thing does not have the potential pitfalls of channeling or prophecy. It’s just kind of interesting and fun, and it really is trying to tell us something. Maybe someone who is smarter than I am can figure out what.
10-19-08 I was interested in Obama’s IQ, and tried to find it on the net. I stumbled across a site that estimated Bush’s IQ as 111.1, and the number 10.1111 was in a URL cited in the article. By the way, I could not find anything reliable about Obama’s IQ, but there is a think tank called Lovenstein Instute which will probably make an estimate if he actually becomes President. They have estimates for many of our past Presidents.
Also the software update program popped up and showed one of the updates needed was 11.1 MB in size. I wonder if numbers like this are much more common in internet and computer use than the rest of the world, because that is where I am seeing most of it. Computer users do see a lot more numbers than most other people, but accountants see even more. If I was an accountant, or worked with polls or other statistics would I be seeing it frequently in the numbers I work with on the job, or is this just unique to computers, for some reason?
10-25-08 I opened a song under Garage Band that I have not worked on for way too long, and practiced with it for a while. When I closed it, I noticed that it has 111 measures. It’s always been that way, but I just noticed it today. It sounds a lot like some of the songs on Full City Roast. If I produce another CD like that, this song will probably be on it. It’s a smooth jazz piece that is faster and more complicated than most of what I play. I really hope I can play it live, because I do like it.
10-30-08 When I went to Fry’s to buy an ink cartridge, I noticed that nearly all the cartridges on the shelf had the number 11:11, printed exactly like that on the computer generated price label. I have no idea what that number means to Fry’s. It probably has nothing to do with anything new age or my blog experiment. For what it’s worth, I also looked up at the clock today, just when it happened to be 1:11 PM. Just as I was going to shut down my computer for the day, I decided to load the new software upgrades from Apple, and there was an upgrade for migration of files from one computer to another with a size of 11.1 MB.
11-5-08 I bought some bulk herbs at the Sacramento Natural Food Coop, and noticed the price on one of the jars was $1.11 per ounce. Also, yesterday, I happened to look at the clock on my computer while working on a writing project, and it was 1:11. That, by itself, was not significant enough to put here, because I was timing something in the kitchen and was looking at the clock frequently, but I decided to go ahead and include it with the jar of herbs.
11-9-08 I filled my gas tank after doing a gig in Roseville, and asked how many clerks work at that gas station, and if they all had unique numbers that they work under. The reason I asked these questions is because the receipt had a line on it that said, “Clerk # 1111”. Interestingly, the person who usually handles my transactions was very busy and called someone else to do it. That someone else was a young man who works under that number. Chances are, I will see that again there, because he will be working there for a while, I’m sure.
Just from the way these things go, every 4 days or so, I will bet nothing of this sort happens on November 11 of this year, but we’ll see.
11-22-08 Yesterday, I was looking for ink cartridges at Office Depot, and there were 2 numbers on the packages which started with 111 and a dash with the rest of the number. This reminded me of the cartridges at Fry’s, which had the 11:11 on the packages. Today, I went to the kitchen to warm up my coffee and found that it was 11:11 on the clock on the microwave oven. It has been quite a while since November 9, so the frequency of this does seem to be declining, for now. It does appear to come in cycles, for some reason, kind of like sunspots. I wonder if other people who experience this sort of thing are also seeing cycles. It might be hard to notice them if you are not logging the occurrences as I am doing here. Some wild speculation here, what if the cycles are happening at the same time for everyone, or connected in some less obvious way? If anyone else is doing this, it would be interesting to compare notes.
11-23-08 When I was filling up my gas tank today, the pump stopped at 7.111 gallons. That is pretty close to what I usually use for a week of driving. I have a small, 4 cylinder car because I saw the very high gas prices coming a couple of years before it happened, when I needed to replace my terrible old Subaru. Maybe a bigger car would have taken 11.111, for all I know. By the way I had a bumper sticker on that car that said, “Subaru” is Japanese for “Fiat”, but Subaru is actually a lot worse. In the 3 years I owned that car, I probably spent over $4,000 on repairs. I kept thinking, this is finally it. Everything is fixed now, but within a few weeks, something else would break. I would never buy another one. I once owned a Fiat 850 “spider”, and it did not need nearly as much repair, plus it was a joy to drive, and got 40 MPG. Wish I had it now.
11-24-08 As I was getting ready to take my bags and bags of money to the bank, I noticed that someone had written me a check, and the check number was 1111. Just when I thought it wasn’t going to happen for a while, there it is again. I was getting really worried about a crazy right wing lawyer named Philip Berg, who may have found a way to undo the election, and give the Republicans another 4 years. It’s almost as if Someone said to me, “Don’t worry about it”. I try not to, but I don’t see how we can survive another 4 years of this. Maybe sanity will prevail in the Supreme Court and it won’t happen.
11-26-08 I downloaded a file from a site today, and when I opened the window for the download, I saw that there had been 111 previous downloads before I got there.
11-28-08 I had a recurrence of an old health problem and ended up in the hospital. My room was number 4111. When I had a blood pressure test during admission, the low number was something like 71, and the high was 111. (pretty good for someone as old as me)
12-5-08 Shortly after getting home from the hospital, I noticed the time on my microwave clock was 11:11.
12-9-08 After doing a lot of reading about food and vitamin K, I noticed the time was 1:11. That miraculous internal, biological clock still knows exactly when to look at the clock and see these numbers, even though I am usually clueless about the time. Amazing.
12-14-08 I was playing guitar today, getting ready for my hopefully triumphant return this Thursday, and was brought back to reality by a thumb dumb with my right hand which sounded really awful. I looked around and noticed the time was exactly 11:11. I went back to playing. I don’t want to be too rusty when I get back. Interesting timing on that boo boo. What made my thumb slip at exactly that time?
12-17-08 While driving my car today, I checked that little sticker about oil changes, and noticed that the next one is due at 106,111 miles. (It’s kind of an old car, but has been reliable so far.)
12-30-08 When I went to the clinic for an “INR” test today, I noticed that the last person to sign in, just before me, had a birth date of 11-11-85. I notice that lately, I have seen more of these numbers in the real world and less on the computer. So much for my earlier theory about seeing it more often on the computer because there are a lot more numbers there. It doesn’t always work like that.
1-12-09 It has been a while now, and nothing happened yesterday, on January 11. Today I saw the number 111 in a mailing address on a web site while searching for someone I used to know in the San Jose area. A few days ago I saw 1:11 on the clock, but I was looking at it frequently because I was cooking something for a specific amount of time, for a late lunch.
1-13-09 I was loading some stuff from a stack of CDs into my computer today when I noticed this number. There it is again, between the zeros. This is part of the window on the application I was using. Does this mean another “surge” is beginning, after a slow down for a while? Time will tell. Due to a program bug in Iweb, I can’t put the picture here. It’s at the top of the page.
1-17-09 Just after arriving home, I looked at the clock on the microwave oven just in time to see it change from 11:10 to 11:11. Maybe this is my answer to saying I was wishing whatever was making all this 1111 stuff happen would fix my luck, and undo some of the bad, a more practical use for an ability to tweak probabilities than just showing me numbers. I don’t know, maybe it just doesn’t work that way, for some reason.
1-28-09 I found the gasoline receipt while sorting through the monthly mountain of paperwork, so I scanned it and posted it at the top of this page. Lately, I have been seeing a lot of 1 and 2 combinations and an 1138, but not 1111. Some times I think I should have a place for that on this blog as well.
1-30-09 I just happened to walk past a clock and look it at 1:11 PM today, and then saw an article on the idiot box at Thai Basil Lincoln about the budget problems, and part of it showed “111 billion dollars” flashed on the screen. I think I said something earlier about the question, “what if everyone starts seeing these numbers?”. If they appear on TV a lot, that will certainly happen. No doubt there are other public places they can show up that I have not thought of. Imagine a big sporting event, for example, where there is a tie and both teams score 11 points. Possible? Maybe.
2-15-09 Maybe I look at the clock too much. Today, I saw 12:21, 11:38 and 1:11 on different clocks while I was doing normal things I do during the day. I do know that this didn’t happen while I was working in San Jose, and looking at the clock very frequently. I was doing things that required knowing what time it was, and also, time seemed to crawl by so slowly. Minutes seemed like hours, and the more tired I got, the worse that got.
I guess the big 11:11 blitz is over. Clearly, these things are happening a lot less frequently than they were for a while. It has been 2 weeks since the last entry.
2-28-09 Yesterday, the phone rang at exactly 11:11, according to the clock right next to the phone. I just checked it against the clock on the computer (which is automatically set to a clock provided on Apple’s web site), and it’s a minute off. I don’t really think anyone is intentionally calling me at exactly that time, but it has happened a few times. This happened a little less than 2 weeks from the last entry. Interesting.
3-3-09 I started working on a movie project when I noticed the first frame was one minute, eleven seconds, and seventeen ticks. It looked like this: 1:11:17. I don’t remember seeing a number with 5 ones in it, but I am not sure. There is a picture of it at the top of this page.
3-7-09 I just happened to look at the clock in the kitchen at 11:11 today, and then, on the same day, I walked past it again at 1:11 PM. Curious question, Will this be affected by setting all the clocks to daylight savings time? More will be revealed.
3-8-09 I got a phone call from someone who remembers things a lot better than I do, reminding me that I should set my clocks for daylight savings time. After the call, I did, and the time was 12:11, so guess what time it was after I changed the setting. Well, maybe that’s my answer to the question in the last entry.
3-9-09 While watching a PBS story about money on an English web site, I noticed the number “41111” displayed prominently for a split second. I was able to roll it back and get a snapshot. Here is another example of these numbers being in a place where everyone can see them, by accident or design, I am not sure. Just as I finished posting this I noticed the time was 11:11, so I added the last sentence.
3-10-09 Just as I pulled into the usually busy Coop parking lot, I noticed a car with a license plate that ended with the number 111. the owner was just packing bags full of goodies in it as I arrived, and was pulling out as I walked in.
3-12-09 I noticed 2 111 numbers while looking up news on the web today. One was a photo gallery with 11 pictures in it about people in England having the last drinking party on the trains before it is prohibited, with “1/11” prominently showing by the first image. and the other was about flash mobs, and was titled “111 shirtless men”. There is more information about flash mobs at http://improveverywhere.com/
3-13-09 Another time when I happen to look at the clock at 11:11. What esoteric, spiritual thing is that trying to tell me? I look at the clock too frequently? Nope. I used to WATCH the clock when I was working myself to death in San Jose, because I was tired all the time, and just wanted to go home and rest. I don’t recall ever noticing 11:11, even though I was looking at the clock more frequently as lunch time got closer. Maybe it’s just telling me that it’s past my bed time. Good night.
3-14-09 I just looked up a bet about cold fusion on Intrade, and the volume showed as 111 trades. Looks like I’m in the middle of another flurry here. There has been a lot of this in the last few days. I’ll be curious to see how long it lasts.
3-16-09 The number 111 showed up twice today while working on a video project.
3-25-09 I happened to see the clock at 1:11 today, and then, this evening, saw 111 again in unexpected place on a web site. In fact, it showed up in 2 different places on the same page, in a different context each time. The second was the number of times it had been previously viewed. If I had looked at it on a different day, it would have been a different number. Interesting.
3-27-09 Once again, the number 111 showed up on a web site, this time as a temperature. It was the third page I opened today. Am I spending too much time looking at sites, or is there just a lot of people who use this number at every opportunity? Since other people who look at the internet frequently have not reported this, I guess I am still being strangely attracted to these numbers.
3-30-09 I was watching “Loose Change” for the first time today, and noticed a screen shot that said “Chapter 111” slightly past 2/3 of the movie. Later, I realized that the chapters are marked with Roman numerals, but without the bars under and over the characters, and the actual number was 3. By the way, the number 911 turned up in the New York state lottery exactly 1 year, to the day, after it happened. Hmmmmm. At the time, I saw that as evidence that the lottery was rigged, but in light of all of these 111 events, seen with my own eyes, I don’t think so any more.
4-9-09 I was reading an article in the Sacramento Bee about Starbuck’s closing more coffee shops, and noticed one of them had a street address of 111, in Lodi.
4-12-09 While working with some photos, I cropped one to improve the appearance a little bit, and then, when I saved the cropped image, I noticed the width was 17.111 inches. One pixel either way during the crop, and the “111” part of that number would not have been there.
4-21-09 Today, I was considering writing an entry and just commenting that it has been a while since there has been an 1111 event in my life, and speculating that, just maybe, things are back to normal. Then I read an article on a web site, which had nothing to do with numbers, and the author stated that he saw the time to be 11:11, just when something very significant happened in his life. He took that to be a positive sign, and so do I.
4-22-09 A friend called me and when I went to pick up the phone, the clock on the microwave showed 11:11. This clock is actually off by a few minutes, so the friend could not have set that up intentionally.
4-25-09 I just checked my email and one of the messages was an invitation to a conference about local political issues. The room where it will be held is number 111.
4-29-09 I was doing an audio recording from tape to computer today and just happened to walk by the computer when the quicktime audio recorder was showing 11 minutes and 11 seconds, 11:11 again! It was around 2 PM. There is always some way for this number to pop up whether the time is 11:11 or not.
4-29-09 I usually don’t get 2 events in one day, but today I did a search for dancing robots, and found this very entertaining video. As it was playing, I looked up at the URL. It was:
http://flurohair.livejournal.com/111117.html
4:30:09 I just happened to check the time at 1:11 PM today. I looked over this blog entry for a while and noticed quite a few times where a one eleven number and the number 7 were included in the same number, such as yesterday’s URL entry. Interesting.
5-1-09 While I was working with an image on my father’s computer (He’s in the Apple cult, just like me, and has an Imac.) I noticed the size of the image, in inches, ended with the numbers 1.11. I pointed that out to him and he asked if I was still seeing this a lot. I guess the answer is yes. There seems to be a lot of it happening right now.
5-2-09 When looking up information on a car, I found the fuel tank was 11.1 gallons. ( I am not into big gas guzzlers, this was a Toyota Yaris) I would consider one of these as a next car if there is enough room to carry my music equipment. My present car is a Ford Escort wagon, and it has enough room, and gets about 28 to 38 MPG depending on where I drive it. It’s a great musician’s car. By the way, I am very interested to see what will come out of the Fiat and Chrysler merger. Fiats are much more reliable than they used to be, and American auto workers work much cheaper than their European counterparts, especially after the recent renegotiation of their contracts. We may see the Fiat 500, made in the USA, for example, for less than $10K, maybe a lot less. Stay tuned.
5-3-09 I found what looked like a good deal at the thrift store, a Bose 100W passive sub for $10. I opened it up and checked it out, poked a meter at it, and measured the resistance of speaker coils and the crossover. Everything checked out and looked really good. Nothing was fried. Yes, it was a good deal. After I put it back together, I went to the microwave oven to warm my coffee, and the time was 11:11. Amazing day.
5-4-09 I don’t know what to think of this. Some times I look for UFO stories, to see if anything really interesting like the O’Hare story has happened recently. I stumbled across an entertaining story about a hoax by a couple of guys using red auto flares and big helium balloons. I looked up a video of the story, and noticed a number 11:12 in the lower right corner. When I watched it again, it turned out to be a clock, which read 11:11 during the first minute or so of the video. Here is the URL:

Unfortunately for the hoaxers the local authorities have no sense of humor, and charged them as criminals. I guess that means some lies are OK and some are not. It’s okay to tell a big, scary lie that starts a war and gets half a million people killed, but don’t disturb the good citizens of your local community with phony UFOs.
5-7-05 As I was reading a blog from the Guardian I wondered how much time I had before it was time to get ready to go to Roseville. I looked up at the clock on the corner of the monitor, and saw that I had plenty of time. It was 11:11. Then I laughed, realizing that many people in this time zone and the opposite one on the other side of the planet are probably doing the same thing, at exactly the same time, since the computer clocks are usually synchronized with an on line clock. Also, yesterday, I was looking for something in the long, complicated manual for my digital camera, and flipped through the pages to where I thought it might be. That page number was 111. Duh, I almost forgot about that one.
5-8-09 While I was driving home from Lincoln, I saw an SUV drive past me slowly enough for me to notice that the last 4 digits on the license plate looked like “1111”. Unlike the pickup referred to earlier, it was not going really fast, so I got a good look at it. It was probably a California plate, which means it would really end with “I111”, because they always have a number, 3 letters, and 3 numbers. This reminded me to take a look at the odometer on my car, which was getting near 111,111 miles, and sure enough, it was about to turn up. It did so about 2 miles from home, and I was on a side street, so I could stop and take a picture of it. It’s almost certain that I would have forgotten about that and it would have passed that number while my attention was elsewhere if I had not seen that license plate, so there would be no picture. Wow! Just to add a little more to this, I saw a plate ending with 999 shortly after. Of course, after the 1111 plate, I was looking at them a lot more than usual.
5-10-09 I had no reason to look at the clock frequently today, but I saw 11:38 and 1:11 both on the same day. I think I might start noting the 1138s here as well. I have seen a few of them recently and did not do that. Here are some of them I did record elsewhere recently, but I saw it a few other times and didn’t bother.
“ I have noticed that the number 1138 has been appearing in my life lately, kind of like 1111. So every time it appears, I will add an entry here, and maybe add it to the blog.
12-17-08 I encountered the number on a web site, apparently arbitrarily chosen by the writer. Took snapshot called baby1138.
12-27-08 The phone rang today, and when I went to pick it up, I noticed the time was exactly 11:38.
1-27-09 Happened to look at the clock at 11:38 today. It just occurred to me that if all these clocks were analog dial type, we would not see these numbers nearly so often, because minutes are not so precisely readable. Is there a reason for digital clocks all over the place?
2-1-09 Looked up at computer clock just as it turned to 1138. ”
It will be interesting to see if there are more like this.
5-11-09 I had lunch at a local Mexican restaurant today. When I got the receipt, I saw the phrase “Order #111” printed prominently on it, so I scanned it and posted it at the top of this page. My money has been kind of tight lately, so I don’t eat out very often. This makes it even less likely that I would get a 111 on the receipt, but it happened. Also, I made another stop on the way home and bought some things at a store. When I got to the front of the line and paid for the stuff, the time on the receipt was 11:22. I don’t usually say much about that type of number here because there are a lot of them, and they are more likely, but this was on the same trip as the Mexican restaurant, and the 111 on that receipt.
5-14-09 I woke up and went into the kitchen just in time to see the clock say 1:11. Then I listened to “Coast to Coast” on the radio, and ended up looking up something called “Arlington Institute”, a think tank that is exploring precognitive dreams by ordinary people, and recommended by Dr. Larry Dossey, the guest. Less than half an hour later, I read a page on that site, and noticed that I was the 1111th reader, or maybe the counter was stuck on 1111 for some reason. I took a screen snapshot of that line and put it at the top of this page. Chances are, there were a lot of people reading that page during the same evening because of Coast to Coast.
5-18-09 I just read an article about Subaru’s “Stella” electric concept car, and learned that the motor produces 54 horsepower, and 111 foot pounds of torque.
5-19-09 I was working on an image for an art project and when I finished it, I made a JPEG version, and changed the size to 800 pixels square, the dimensions in inches changed to 11.111 inches.
5-25-09 I usually check the “trash” folder before I empty it, just to make sure I am not deleting something I meant to keep. Today, when I did that, there were 111 items. One more screen shot at the top of the page. There was also a grocery store receipt today which was $11.19. I didn’t think that was significant enough by itself, so I almost forgot about it.
5-26-09 A program was acting strangely, so I looked at the “activity monitor”, another program which can give you some idea what is going on in the computer. The process at the very top of the list was called “synchronize-pref” and it was numbered “1111”. The word “synchronize” is very close to the word “synchronicity”. Hmmmmmm.
When I took the screen shot of it, a new process called “screencapture” showed up above it just before the shot was actually taken. Makes sense, I guess.
6-3-09 On Monday, I saw 11:11 on the clock, but I was timing something I was cooking, and looking frequently, so I didn’t think much of it.
Today I looked over the papers for dealing with state sales tax, and noticed that one of the offices had a street address of 111. Then I finished a small graphics design project, and, when I emailed it, I noticed that the time that the email was actually sent was 1:11 PM.
6-4-09 Today, I just happened to look at the clock at 1:11 as I finished washing the boring dishes. This was one of those days when Mount Dishmore grew to monstrous proportions before I got to it.
6-6-09 I visited Skip’s Music today and while I was there, I noticed someone playing with a Roland guitar synth. I went by there again just when he walked away, and he left it set on “program #111”. I played with it for a while, and found that it has really good sounds, and responds much more quickly than my 10 year old version, a GR-30. I really wanted to buy it, but it was over a grand. I would have to sell a lot of CDs to get that, and I could create enough songs to fill a few really good new CDs if I had it. Maybe some day.
6-8-09 Today, I was looking through the accumulated junk on a pocket drive, and found that one of the folders was 1.11 GB in size, and I also went out and bought a lot of stuff for making CDs, mostly at Fry’s. The last 3 digits of the total on the store receipt were one dollar and eleven cents. A penny more or less and it would have meant nothing to me. Maybe just doing a lot of things exposes you to more possibilities for seeing these numbers, but I know other people who are busier than me, and they don’t seem to notice this. The longer it keeps going, the more interesting it gets.
6-10-09 I went on a bike ride and saw a license plate on a parked car that ended with the numbers “21112”. After that, I started looking at plates on a lot of cars, but didn’t see anything else like that.
6-11-09 I found a USB card at Fry’s for less than 8 bucks, which was supposed to work with a classic Macintosh. I have an old 7200/90 with no USB card, so I got it. When I started up the computer, the clock was one of the first things to pop up on the screen, and it said 11:11. I tested the card and it worked, which was really good news, because I tried a few others in the last couple of years on this machine, and they didn’t. There is a different computer which I use frequently to arrange and practice songs. I was practicing a guitar piece on it and happened to look at the clock at exactly 11:11. My first thought was “hey, wait a minute! I already saw that today!”. Then I realized that the old 7200 had been sitting on a shelf unused for months, and I never set it for daylight savings time. That was how I saw 11:11 twice in the same morning.
6-13-09 Still working on these old 7200 Macs. I had 2 of them gathering dust on my junk shelf for a few years, and I found some cheap USB and firewire cards that actually work on these antiques at Fry’s, so I am upgrading them with system 9.1 and some very old versions of Photoshop, as well as some music and web design software, and an archaic version of Toast. They each have 2 SCSI drives, that are the same size as just one DVD today. I used one of these machines a long time ago to produce Didgeridoo Dreams and Spiritsong. I am not sure what I will do with these stone age marvels, but there may be low income artists out there who can use a cheap, but capable computer. One of the drives had a lot of old music files and stuff I wanted to keep, so I decided to burn it all on a DVD. When I opened Toast and set up the burn, there were 111 items on the drive.
6-15-09 While I was looking through applications for one of the old computers, I found that the Photoshop 3 folder was 11.1 MB. I use a fairly new Mac Mini to update this web site, and Photoshop on this machine fills up 146 MB. The newer versions really are a lot bigger, and do a lot more. I think I am done with this now, but I would not be surprised if the 1111 numbers find other ways to show up in my life.
6-17-09 I was doing something that involved a lot of data transfer, backing up a drive, and looked at “activity monitor” to see how it was doing. I saw that this computer and sent 111 K bits through the network during this run.
6-19-09 I converted a large image to jpeg today to send it through email, and was curious about the size, which means how long it would actually take to send it. The exact size turned to be 4,255,111 bytes. Any slight difference in the image would have resulted in the 111 not showing up. Also, the 255 may be significant, because to an ex computer nerd like me, 255 if converted to binary is “11111111”. How about that? Normally I don’t look for 255, but when it is on the other side of a comma from 111, it is a lot more significant. Earlier today, I saw 11:11 on the computer clock. I don’t remember why I happened to look at it right then. Just as I was about to shut down the computer, I am pretty sure I heard the news announcer say that unemployment is 11.1 precent. If that’s the official unemployment rate, the real rate, counting long term unemployed and discouraged workers, is probably at least 18 percent. I hope it’s not really that high.
6-21-09 I just happened to look at the computer clock after sending an email, and it was 11:11.
6-22-09 I tried downloading a “sound font” for a sound card in one of my old power Macs, and the size turned out to be 1111 KB. I took a screen shot of it while it was loading and posted it at the top of this page. This is actually an exported image from the old machine, using a USB flash drive. It doesn’t matter what computer you use, 1111 still shows up, just the same.
6-25-09 I signed a petition to stop the crack down in Iran, where thousands of good people are being injured, jailed, or killed by police for protesting the stolen election. at the time I signed, they had 111,167 signatures, and they are hoping to get a million. I hope they get far more than that. Here is the URL:

Later, the same day, I was l looking for the best deal on some paper at the office supply store, and found a package of 750 sheets, and the sign on the shelf said it was “96 bright/111 euro”. I have no idea what the “euro” part means. It was not the price, that was about 7 bucks.
I looked that up, and found that there is a European ISO standard for paper brightness, and the numbers are slightly higher than ours.
6-30-09 Someone on the local radio station talked about the temperature in Sacramento today, which was about 90 degrees. He said it could have been worse, it could have been 111 degrees, like it was a few days ago. As far as I know, the temperature in Sacramento has not been that high lately, but it was even higher in some outlying areas.
7-3-09 I just happened to look at the microwave in the kitchen at 11:11 while putting away some food in the cabinet.
7-6-09 Someone I occasionally exchange emails with in Australia sent me one at 11:11 PM (in my time zone) on July first, and I just noticed it today. It should have been dated 7-1-09 in this blog, but I just got around to checking my email today. I get kind of busy some times, and forget things.
7-7-09 I was wondering what the value is on some of my old Apple dinosaurs, so I checked them out on Ebay. One of them was a 6500/250 which was priced at $111.38 at the time I looked at it. That gets 111 and 1138 in the same number. These old Macs really do hold their value better than other machines. This one was discontinued in 1998. I was beginning to think there was no real need to make a note of the 1138 occurrences, but I guess I will. Also, I made an archive DVD using Toast 5, and after I dragged the folder I wanted to save into the window, it said there were 111 items.
Also again, just when I thought I was done with this, I downloaded some stuff to run on one of these antiques, and one of the file names was “DAEPowermix111.sit”. No kidding.
7-15-09 A few days ago I finished creating a new song, and made an MP3 file of it. I just noticed that the MP3 file is 11.1 megabytes.
7-17-09 I got some pills at a pharmacy today, and there was one of those things where you pull a number and wait for it to be called. The number being served at the time was 104, and the number I got was 120, so of course I saw the number 111 on the counter. If these number tickets go from 1 to 999, that is a probability of about 1 in 58. Not as impressive as some of the other stories here, and not as impressive as actually pulling ticket #111, but still pretty good.
7-18-09 Today, I went to the kitchen to get a cup of java and noticed that the clock on the microwave was 11:11. Later, I was curious how much CPU time a compression program was using, (still a little nerdy) and checked it out using “Activity Monitor”. The CPU was about half busy, and the data transferred to the disk was 1.11 GB, at the moment I checked it. Curiously, both of these happened shortly after checking out the “Fire the Grid” web site. This is a group meditation effort involving millions of people. They are going to do it again on July 28. The last time they did it, it had a very measurable objective effect on the “eggs” at the Global Consciousness project. To see what this is all about, go to this link and use their search function to find “fire the grid”. It will be interesting to see if the same effect happens again. Since Tuesday is not a scheduled day for me, I will probably participate. In California it will be at 3:19 PM. Events such as this may actually be having a positive effect on our world. I would have scoffed at such an idea at one time, but I don’t now.
7-25-09 I just posted a new song to the “Turtle Tracks” page, and it was surprising how many times the number 1.11 showed up on the network “data received” window, while putting it up. It ranged from 0 to about 2.5 K bits per second, but 1.11 showed up more often than any other number. Of course the sending window was much faster than that, and didn’t change as much.
7-26-09 This is another example of 111 where everyone can see it. Harry Patch, a decorated veteran of world war 1, and one of the few left, passed away last Saturday at the age of 111 years. I heard the story on the car radio while driving home yesterday. Here is the article about him in the Guardian.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jul/26/harry-patch-wells-first-world-war
8-8-09 I got really sick this morning, apparently with a food problem of some kind, and was getting better later in the day. I was wondering if I was in good enough shape to go to a fire dance event that I was scheduled to play at, worrying that I might get sick again. I checked to see how much time I had before I had to go, and the time was 1:11. I took that as a sign that things would be OK and went. It was really good, and I didn’t have any more problems. When I finally drove home after it was over, I wondered how late I was getting home this evening. I looked at the car clock and it said 11:11
8-13-09 I looked up CD Baby to find out how many CDs and downloads they have sold lately, and they proudly announced they had paid 111 million dollars to independent artists. Unfortunately, not very much of that went to me. Maybe some day. Later today, I visited a guy I some times call Java Jim, who runs a drive-thru coffee place. When he saw my car coming up to the window, he announced that the time was 1:11, and in fact, it was. He must have read this blog. I also saw 11:38 a couple of times this week, once on the clock and once on a web site.
I have been doing this 1111 blog experiment for almost a year now, and, as the DJs say, the hits just keep on coming. George Noory said a while back that he was not seeing 1111 any more, and then, more recently, he is seeing it again, very frequently.
In my life, a few times, I thought it was going to stop, and that would be the end of this experiment. There have been a few long gaps, but so far, it keeps on going. I got most of my “sightings” on this page, and the number of them has been quite impressive. When it has been exactly a year, I will see if I can count them and put the number up here. That’s about 3 weeks from now. Even if there are no more, it’s going to be a lot.
Gotta go. I’m off to a Skeptics Anonymous meeting now.
8-16-09 I looked for an MP3 file I have been playing some times and found that the last time I opened it was on August 5 at 1:11 PM. and this was another one of those days when I saw 11:11 and 1:11 on a clock on the same day. Do I watch the clock too much? You would have to stare at for this to happen so frequently, I would think.
8-19-09 Yesterday I was really busy on a couple of computer related projects, like rebuilding a battery pack for my old Powerbook 5300 laptop. They don’t make these packs any more, so you have to cut them open and replace the cells. Nickel hydride AA cells work great for this, and actually have about 50 percent more capacity than the original, so I got a bunch of them at Fry’s and spent several hours cutting plastic and soldering together cells. It looks like a home made bomb, but you can’t see the hack job when it is actually in the computer. By the way, don’t try this if you don’t have a lot of experience. You have to be really good to solder a wire to a battery without heating the battery too much.
I also read that you can plug in a PC card that will use a compact flash card as a drive. I had an 8 GB card, so I found this PC card at Fry’s, for ten bucks, and tried it. It worked, and it’s a big help on a machine that only has the original 750 MB hard drive. You can put a lot of music, pictures and videos on 8 gigs, even in the older formats that these dinosaurs can play. As busy as I was with all that, it was another day when I saw 11:11 and 1:11 on the same day, and the “date created” time stamp on one of the music files I put on the compact flash card was 11:38.
8-23-09 I saw 11:11 once on the clock today.
8-28-09 My father had an old picture of me as a kid on his computer. When I looked at, I used the “get info” window to find out more about it, because he is having trouble emailing it at full resolution. I noticed that on the last time it was opened before I looked at it, the time was 1:11.
8-29-09 I saw 1:11 on the clock in the kitchen.
8-31-09 While I was working on a picture, called “tortopelli”, I needed to make it bigger, and noticed the original size was 3.111 inches wide, and later in the day, I plugged in a USB flash drive and the empty space on it was 111.9 MB. That’s a pretty good double hitter for one day.
I counted these sightings over the last 12 month period, and there are 133 of them. The monthly average would be about 11, and by days it would average out to about 1 incident every 3 days. The occurrences per month are very bumpy, with only 4 in February and 19 in June. There are 4 months with 10 or 11 incidents. May and June are two big months back to back, and the 2 smallest happen to be January and February. If I do this for another year, it will be interesting to see if the monthly pattern is similar. I would not expect that, but who knows?

Here is where I decided to add “1138”, as well. This might be interesting...
Both of these popped up on the 5300 laptop while I was working on it.
Tortopelli
