Our AT Thru Hike
Our AT Thru Hike
Where will we sleep?
While on the trail, our shelter of choice will often be the Rainshadow 2, an ultralight tarp tent designed by Henry Shires. Having experimented with a number of designs, we really appreciate the fact that this three person single wall shelter is very lightweight (42 ounces), offers plenty of room for two people and equipment, as well as outstanding protection from inclement weather and insects.
The trail has more than 200 shelters and camp sites available for hikers. The shelters, are generally open, three-walled structures with a wooden floor, although some shelters are much more complex in structure. Shelters are spaced less than a day's hike apart, most often near a water source and a privy. They generally have spaces for tent sites in the vicinity. Shelters are maintained by local volunteers and kept in good condition.
The trail passes through small towns, on average, every 3-5 days. In addition to official shelters, many persons offer their homes, places of business, or inns to accommodate AT hikers.
